Doctor question - please advise - possible TMI

Okay, so I've seen blood in my stool over the last few weeks. This may make me an idiot for not doing something sooner, but I otherwise feel totally fine and thought it was because I've increased the amount of fiber I'm eating and occasionally I strain when I have a BM. Once or twice and I wouldn't have thought anything of it, and it's not every single time, but now that it's continued on this long I'm thinking it's time to see a doctor.  There are no visible hemorrhoids and I've never had that before, but I do notice slight discomfort (on the inside) on the left hand side. I'm wondering if something is there that is getting irritated when I have a BM.

So, what doctor would I see for this? Should I just go to my PCP first and will he possible refer me to someone else? I've never had butt problems. This stresses me out.

Thanks. Tongue Tied

  • Is it red blood, or blackish? My Dr.'s office told me red is 'roids (even not visible ones) or just strain and blackish is something to worry about/go in for.

  • It's red, bright red.

Sometimes the toilet water is tinged red and sometimes it's not, but I look at my stool in the toilet and see that there is red on the stool. I haven't taken out a sample and investigated whether it's just on the outside of the stool or inside as well. Not sure if that makes a difference or not.

    Thanks for the response.

  • First, yes, probably your PCP. Second, I had a bit of blood when I wiped for YEARS, and always just attributed it to the fact I wasn't going everyday like normal people do. It still happens occasionally, but when it does I realize I've been eating like crap and not going as often. It sometimes would happen to me everytime I went too. Little consolation I know, but hey, I"m not dead yet.

...you should probably see a doctor though if it's starting to worry you.

  • I have a lot of GI problems, I had to have a colonoscopy a month or two before I got pregnant. It sucked. Royally. They finally diagnosed me with IBS, which is kind of a "we don't know what it is" diagnosis.

Any way, I'd get a little bit of blood in my stool sometimes, nothing too serious, but noticable.  My doctor said it was probably from fissures or other irritation since it was red and not a lot. They also didnt' find anything of concern on the scope so unless it gets to be a lot of blood, painfull or black, she said not to worry.

ETA: If it's worrying you I'd get ahold of your doctor just to be sure.

  • Thank you everyone. :)

It's not the first time I've had blood in my stool, and this time it coincides with me changing my diet so I wondered if that had anything to do with it and that my BMs are different than they used to be when I was on a higher fat diet.

After I wipe and see a blood drop or two, it goes away and I see nothing on the toilet paper anymore. It's not a lot of blood, but it's alarming to see so frequently when it used to only happen once or twice a month maybe.  This has been more often than not over the last couple of weeks.

  • Sounds like an internal roid, but call your PCP if you're concerned or having a lot of pain.

My vote is internal roids also. Don't go to the doctor unless you are prepared to have things go up your butt.

Thank you for the bluntness of this response. LOL. This was a worry of mine.

    Any OTC remedies to help?

I agree probably roids but another question: is the blood mixed IN the stools or on the outside of them? Because roids would be outside. That was another thing the doc said to watch for.

I haven't removed the stool to investigate whether it's on the inside. Right now, it's only visible on the outside and sometimes the water is tinged red/pink and when I wipe it's bright red (but not much) and goes away after a couple of wipes.

  • Sounds like an internal hemorrhoid.  Those tend to be pretty painless vs the external ones that can swell up, hurt, and itch.  Also internals can cause bleeding along the outside of the stool and can 'drip' blood at times.  Could also be an internal fissure or tear, but I would think those would be pretty painful with every BM.   Are you having any abdominal pain along with this?
