Do you feel your house is a work in progress or done?

I feel like there is always something to be done in my house. It was built in 1979 and never updated until we bought it. Slowly we have been working on it. We have gutted and renovated 1 bathroom, new windows, all new carpet, painted some rooms, replaced everything from ceiling fans to light fixtures to light switches.

We still have to replace the kitchen, new hardwood in the living room, paint basement, finish laundry room, etc etc. I feel we will never be done. We are planning on staying for at least a few years still.

We know a couple who redo their house top to bottom every few years. They love doing it and it is their "hobby". Do you think a house can be "finished" or are most people constantly updating/renovating/organizing? I guess this question wouldn't apply if you live in a new house.

Re: Do you feel your house is a work in progress or done?

  • We bought a 100 year old house and there are tons of things we want to do to it.  We loved the style, the neighborhood, the school district, the space, the structure and the layout

My H loves doing home improvement projects and is now putting the finishing touches on our new kitchen.  There are still tons of things we need to do, but this is our forever house so it was more important to us to have the things listed above rather than all the cosmetic improvements that my H enjoys doing anyway

  • We are basically in the same situation as you, except ours was built in 1977. We have renovated the whole interior with the exception of painting the baseboard. Now that it's renovated, I want to change so many things with the decorating. Plus we could do tons to the outside of it, including windows, siding, a new roof, etc. We have 2 acres so we could do lots of landscaping too. So to answer your question, ours is a work in progress, and I think it always will be!
  • There's a quote in one of those Don't Sweat the Small Stuff books that talks about how they are always painting the Golden Gate Bridge, because by the time they get to one end, the other end needs another coat.  It's an ongoing process, and the book recommends you see your house that way.  It really does make me feel better when I remind myself that everything (relationships, the house, my classroom, parenting...) is a process--there will never be a day when I go, "Whew!  It's all exactly the way I want it, permanently!"  There's always something to work on, but that's part of the experience, ya know?  Besides all the psych mumbo-jumbo, my house will never be "done" because I go on kicks where I want to decorate and finish stuff up, and then I abandon it for a while again. =)
  • We bought our house brand new and there's still stuff to be done! We've already got several years worth of projects to do. I've been working on the landscaping a lot this year. Next year, replace the livingroom furniture. Following year, replace the flooring. I don't think it'll ever be finished - there will be growing children whose rooms will have to be fiddled with, etc.

  • My house is definetly a work in progress.  I have a landscaping guy here right now doing a bunch of work, lol.  It was built in 1991 and we have owned it for 5 years now, there's still a bunch more work to be done to it to make it "exactly what we want it to be"

I do think a house can be "done".  My Mom bought a house about 15 years ago, and immediately reno'd the kitchen and painted the whole thing.  Within 5 years she had re-done almost everything, new carpet, new hardwoods, etc.  then she met and married my Stepdad, and he is VERY handy, and they actually made some significant changes then.  They completely tore out the upstairs 3 bedrooms and made it into 2 larger rooms, complete with a huge master suite that had a kitchenette and a walk in closet.  The former master bedroom downstairs was changed into a formal dining room.

And right when they finished all of their projects, my Mom accepted a new job and moved abroad.  Too funny.

  • We bought a new construction house.  It could be done, there isn't any renovating or anything we need to do.  There's things I'd love to do....wood floors and tile, add some shelves, furniture and decorating...but its not a priority at all.

  • Definitely a work in progress.  And to contrast with yours, ours is brand new and there is still tons to be done.  Not necessarily replacing kitchens or anything, but it takes a long time to put your stamp on it.  Know what I mean?  Right now it still looks sort of cookie-cutter-ish which I hate - beige walls, no crown molding, etc.

And both my husband and I love decorating and personalizing.  We will always be working on some project around here, whether it's big or small. It's just our thing.

  • WIP for sure.  My hubby hates doing home repairs and I love it but, I have so little time to get things done lately.  Most of the stuff left to do is stuff that is not compatible with a LO.  I had no idea how much DH hated this stuff.  I don't think he did either but, we bought this house with the plan that we would do a lot of updating ourselves.  It's a SLOW process around here.

I think done depends on your definition. GL

  • No matter where I live, I can't imagine I will ever be done - always something to change, redo, update, decorate, etc.   Structurally and construction wise, this 1962 house is done for us.  We redid the bathrooms and some of the flooring when we moved in.  Furniture, decor, setup is always changing and improving and rearranging.  Well, actually after putting a lot of money into that stuff, we have just this weekend decided that we are going to stop putting money into this area for a while and focus on some other areas.  House projects is definitely one of our joint hobbies and pastimes.  With that said, an unfinished house from a construction standpoint or a room that was so outdated and hideous would make me crazy.  I am big on needing to love my house and have it "look" like us, kwim?
  • Ha!  1979?  Try 1892!!!  And the people who lived there before us were in their 902 (only the second family to ever ownt he place).  Yeah, it's a work in progress.
