Ammonia burn, maybe?

Someone posted earlier (maybe even yesterday) about needing to strip diapers due to an ongoing rash.  It seemed to be the consensus that her DS was getting ammonia burn.  Well, wouldn't you know it, but today my DS developed pretty much the exact same rash that OP described: red splotches that then get a white filmy look on top, then become open sores.  His little heiny is COVERED in open sores.

I put him to bed in a borrowed disposable and slathered him with A&D and I have DH picking up some diapers on his way home from work.  But what do I do to the diapers?  I can't remember what the original post title was so I can't find the instructions others gave.  I think there was mention of vinegar and powdered tide.

Re: Ammonia burn, maybe?

  • I believe some people have success with stripping or doing vinegar soaks but none of that ever worked for me. I just started using Tide and it worked like magic the first time. Now we wash in Tide regularly.

  • I've never actually had this problem but I've heard others recommend: Calgon (if you have hardish water), vinegar soak, stripping, and original Tide. No clue about which you should try first or anything. I don't think many people have success with vinegar. I believe stripping works immediately. Tide and Calgon are good if you keep having problems.
  • Thanks, ladies.  My poor little guy is miserable!  He cried when I strapped him into his carseat pointing to his diaper.  I've got disposables now and I'm going to try pick some Tide and dawn tomorrow and give them a try.

another suggestion was to strip w/blue dawn (original not concentrated) though i've only ever stripped w/concentrated.

good luck! i hope you can get rid of it soon and that his bum heals quickly!!

I would do a cold wash, then hot wash with detergent (these first two washes to get them fully clean) and then a hot wash (long cycle) with a good dose of vinegar.  Do one warm wash if you like to be sure there is no buildup left.

  • That was me. And I stripped my diapers last night and keep sniffing them because I am still worried. I hate to keep hurting him.

By the way, i could only find the concentrated. I used 2 squirts and washed with a second rinse hot/cold. After that I started again to do two more rinses and really I didn't notice more than a few bubbles. I guess I expected there to be a lot of bubbles. I still did 2 more rinses and one more full wash cycle to be safe. but is it possible I didn't use enough?

  • I hope stripping works but I'm of the belief that stripping is more for buildup causing leaks and not ammonia. I base that on stripping never working for us.
