Baby Names

Devin/Devon

which is most appropriate for a boy?  DH had a wonderful friend when they were in the army, he didn't have many since he was moving all the time, and his friend recently passed away.  he really wants to use this as a name if we ever have a baby boy.

i know this name is/was pretty popular, but we don't personally know any.  i'm ok with the name, maybe even as a mn.  so, what is the preferred spelling?

  • thanks, dh did 23 yrs!  gotta say we are loving the retirement check each month!

wellllllll, this is gonna sound a little crazy, but given all the crazy around here lately it might not be so bad, dh isn't exactly sure how he spelled it.  Tongue Tied  you know how everyone in the army is called by their last name?  well dh knows his fn was devin/devon, but not sure of the spelling.  i never met the guy, but we spoke on the phone a lot, his last duty station was hawaii, and i always called him by his last name as well.

In that case, I do think Devon looks a little better. Have you considered giving the baby the guy's last name? As a MN maybe?

  • hee hee, his last name is hussain.  so not going to happen.

  • Yeah, I was going to say the same thing about honoring the spelling. Is there any chance you can call the Army up and ask? I know that sounds vague and I'm sorry - I'm not familiar with the services at all, but I'm sure there are records...it's just a matter of what's public information. Heck, sometimes just plain old Google - maybe he had a FB page?

Devin and Devon are both legit spellings now and both considered unisex thanks for their popularity a while back, but I still consider it just a boys name. I like the look of the O in Devon, but generally, I try to stick with the older version of the name. In this case, Devin. HTH!

  • For some reason. Devin always reads male to me, and Devon as female.

That said, I've known both a male and a female who spelled it Devin.

  • I think they're both fine spellings for a boy but Devon looks better.

  • Devin = male

Devon = female, or pronounced "de-vaughn"

  • Devin for sure.

Devin is the male spelling, Devon is the female spelling.

  • I always thought Devon was a boy name. I've never seen it spelled Devin.
  • I have a male student named Devin.

I would consider Devon to be the female spelling.

    DS, born 8/25/04 -- 7th grade
  • I would pronounce them different ways, so I would go with however your DHs friend spelled it.

    Devin- Dev-in

    Devon- De-vaughn

  • Whichever spelling the friend had, especially if it's going to be a mn. My late brother's name was Deven, spelled that way. So if we honour him with a mn, we're going to spell it that way. I would use Devon if there were no personal connection. To me, Devon is always a boys' name, but I know girls have been using it too. Also, Devin looks more like "devil". I'm not sure if it was ever too popular where I live. Including my brother, I know a Deven, Devon, and a Devin. All boys.
  • This was our fave boy name until DH's cousin "stole" the name last week... :o(  We were going to use it as Devan though... They've chosen Devon. But I know a guy Devan and a girl Devon. Write out all the names together with your LN and see what looks best.
  • I have known a female Devon and a male Devin, so the latter sounds more masculine to me.

I really love the name, and it's wonderful of you both to honor his friend this way.
