Hey Mamas!
I just started pumping to build a supply for my one week old. Her daddy is dying to get to feed her with a bottle. So my question is: How much milk are you putting in a bottle when you pump? So far, I've been storing my milk in 2-3 oz quantities in the bags. Is that enough to start with?
Re: Pumping Question
I'm EBF right now but am trying to build my stockpile for when she starts day care. I asked the LC about this, and they said to only do 2 oz increments, since that is the average meal for now. If you are saving it for when they are older, they recommended doing it in 4 oz (even numbers). I am renting a medela pump from the hospital and my sister gave me a bunch of medela bottles to use for freezer storage. I think they are 3 ounce containers, and my LO is 3 weeks today, so I just fill those and freeze them. But the medela freezer bags I got were 6 oz, but I'll just pump an even number into them, since if I fill a 6 oz and she only wants 3 oz, the rest of that is garbage. The LC said it's better to waste the bag than to waste the milk!
HTH~
I have been pumping a lot b/c my nipples are so tender. My LC/pedi said 2-3 oz. is normal in the first month, but LO has drank 4oz. at some feedings. So I guess if you're trying to get an amount for DH to feed LO try 2oz. and then maybe more if LO is still hungry? Or BF after if LO needs more.
For storage, I am filling 5oz. bags. But I am storing for a wedding where I will be out of town and LO will be with my mom. He'll be getting all his feedings from my stash for 2.5 days, so I'm not worried about waste. What's not used at one feeding will be used a couple hours later. I would say amount you store is dependant on what you're building your supply for.
