tummy time

How do you get your LO to stop hating TT? DS hates hates HATES it with a passion! As soon as you lay him down he will get sooo mad. Sometimes I can lay him down for a couple min..and I will wait until he gets mad to pick him up. I'm just afraid he's not getting it enough and that he's not where he should be. He holds his head up good though. I don't know. I probably am just worried over nothing!

Re: tummy time

  • DS used to hate tummy time but we just got down on the floor and played with him and now he doesn't mind it so much. He really does better if I start him out on his tummy rather then back and the flipping.

  • We don't do it anymore. She holds her head up well enough. My home visitor told me holding her like a football (on her belly) is good for tummy time, too- She's held by me, so that need is satisfied, and I walk around the house with her, which gets things done/satisfies me, and she wants to see where we're going so she looks out. As many times a day as I carry this girl around like this, she gets more than enough TT.

  • DS also hates tummy time, sometimes I can get him to do a few minutes, longer if I lay down with him.  Although even when he his on his tummy he doesn?t even try to move, he just lays there.  When he?s on his back he never stops moving.  It is so frustrating.

I don?t worry about it anymore though, because DS is making progress, even though it may not be as fast as he ?should?  and I found out that my 1 year old niece  NEVER (not even for a minute) did tummy time (she would start screaming before they laid her down), and she?s fine - walking and everything.  So I figure everything will happen when he?s ready. I do encourage him, by trying to put him on his belly, but if he doesn?t do it for very long, I try again later and don?t worry about it!

  • DD actually does ok now, and sometimes we have to put her head over the side of the couch and lay under her which gives us more time without fussies.  Usually I just lean back while holding her and she'll push up that way.  She does have great head control and has been practicing her crunches.

When she was hating it, we would roll her from her back to her belly for a little bit here and there after a diaper change or while on her playmat. As soon as she'd fuss, we'd flip her back over. Eventually she was happy on her tummy and now when she's tired of it, she rolls over :)

This is exactly what we do too.

This is what we do too.  Tummy time is more like rolling time, helping her her back and forth, back and forth.  She doesn't roll on her own consistently yet, so I usually stick close by and help.

  • I found that putting Ds on my chest while laying down helps, he is still lifting his head, also he likes being put on the boppy for a while, and tolerates that much more than tummy time on the floor HTH!
