Babies: 3 - 6 Months

NBR friend needs help!

My friend thinks she is pregnant. Her and her BF had unprotected sex 3 days before her period. She hasn't had her period for 10 days now. She's already peed on a couple of sticks, even though I told her they wouldn't read anything (and they didn't) So my question is, how long should she wait until she takes another test? And are you ovulating right before your period?? She's not too worried anymore, I honestly think she wants a baby...but I told her I'd ask my fellow bumpies! TIA!

  • Isn't it a month that you  have to wait for most tests?  I'm pretty sure it is.  They say that they'll work after your missed period, but if it was missed 3 days after, her body wouldn't have the hormone levels required to do the test yet.  I'm pretty sure everyone ovulates a little bit differently, so I can't help you on that part.

  • Typically you ovulate about 2 weeks before your period (but everyone's cycle can be different). If her period is 10 days late, she should be getting a positive test if she is pregnant. I guess she can keep testing in case she ovulated way later than usual or can go ask her doctor for a test if she's concerned. If she wants a baby I'd suggest she read about how cycles work.

I got a positive HPT before I missed my period at about 8 dpo. So no, you definitely don't have to wait a month!

They had sex 3 days before her expected period?  So she didn't have a period at all and she is now 10 days late?  Is that right?  Most pregnancy tests will give a positive reading on the day of the expected period.  However, if she ovulated late this month (because of travel, stress, illness, of a variety of other factors) her period will be a little late too.  I would tell her to wait a few days and take another test.  If she goes more than a month without a period, then she should go to the doctor and see what they say.

  • If she's pregnant, a HPT should be able to detect it about 10 days past ovulation.  You can ovulate anytime, even during your period so yes she could be pregnant.  You can get pregnant if you have unprotected sex within 24 hours after ovulation or up to 2 weeks before ovulation (sperm can live in the fallopian tubes for up to 2 weeks).   Tell her to keep taking tests every 24 hours or so until she gets a BFP or her period.
I give up trying to get a ticker.  I have a DD that is 2.5 years old and is awesome.  Maybe I'll add a quote to distinguish myself.  Hmmm.  How about...
