dieting and supply?

For the past 4 days I started a new diet. eating healthy and around 1800 calories a day (i know 1800 calories is the minimum you're allowed to eat while breastfeeding).. ever since I started eating around 1800 (it's usually 1900 a day) i noticed my supply started to go down a little. what can i do about this? i really need to lose the weight (i've got a lot of events coming up and i need to be able to look decent and more importantly, feel good about the way i look. plus i've got a lot of weight to lose before i can even be considered a candidate for the breast reduction surgery i'm getting) but i really don't want my supply to dip. help!!

  • Can you up your calorie intake a little bit? Are you exercising too? Maybe up the exercise (make sure you're hydrating enough) and eat a bit more.

  • The only "diet" I've felt comfortable with for maintaining my supply was Weight Watchers. They have extra points for nursing mothers. My DD just turned 1, I've lost 40 pounds and I'm still eating the extra 14 "nursing" points, even though she started eating solids at 7 months.

  • I agree with keeping your calories up a bit as well as making sure that you're hydrated.  Cutting calories will make your supply go down a bit and isn't always the best way to lose weight ESPECIALLY if you're exercising too.  Good luck!

    This. I absolutley love weight watchers for nursing mothers. Its astounding how much extra calories you need when you are breastfeeding compared to a normal "diet".
