should i go to the hospital???

i have this sharp pain moving through my belly, mostly on my right side but it moves just above my belly button as well. i was just laying in bed when it first started and it comes on pretty fast, then stops for a bit and then comes back.

kind of nervous. should i go to the hospital or is this normal? braxton hicks???

  • Personally it just sounds like bad gas pains to me. Braxton hick ctx are a tightening of your stomach and are not painful (generally speaking).

How many weeks are you? I assume it's your first... you should do whatever you are most comfotable with and you know your body better than anyone else so if it's THAT painful and you truly think something is wrong or for piece of mind go ahead. But I would wait a little while and try:

    - drinking some water, peppermint tea, etc...

    - changing position i.e getting up, lying down, etc...

    - trying to rest

    good luck

  • Is it at regular intervals? If so then I'd call/go in. If not, I'd wait since it is probably just growing pains.

BH don't normally hurt, just FYI.

  • ps I had something similar with my first pg I called my dr and they suggested a glass of metemucil and it worked like a charm and I felt better right away.

Also ditto the pp IF you do feel the need to be seen, before immediately going to the ER I would call your Dr's office after hours line and speak to the nurse/dr on call and get their opinions

  • I may call my doc if they last for awhile, but I dont think I'd rush to the ER unless its a serious stabbing pain that you think could be an injury to you. I call my doc probably every 2-3 weeks with some weird symptom, only once has she said "get to the hospital I'll meet you lets check it out." Since you are lying down...put your hands on your stomach ---if its contractions you should feel your muscles tighten and then relax-- if you are having regular contractions then I would for sure go in.

  • That kind of sounds like the pain I've had the last few days.  I think it's RLP - all the descriptions of the symptoms sound like what I've had - sharp pains on my right side that last 10-30 seconds.  I went to the ER because of it and they couldn't find anything wrong - the ER doc said it's probably RLP - not harmful, just painful.

  • I would definitely see the doctor. Braxton Hicks aren't painful and my doctor told me they aren't too "tight". They're very light and barely noticeable for the most part.

It could just be gas, but I wouldn't take the risk. See the doc.

  • Agreed that you need to do what's most comfortable to you- if you are not bleeding, vomiting or have severe back pain, my doctor usually says to wait it out for awhile and call his service before goign to the hospital because without those symptoms it's usually just a normal pain.

As an added FYI- Braxton Hicks contractions absolutely CAN and DO hurt for many people (me included!).  It's scary when you feel them, don't know what they are, and everyone is telling you they shouldn't hurt but for you they do.  So I just wanted you to know that isn't not abnormal if they DO hurt for you.

  • Yes Braxton Hicks CAN hurt!!!! It can feel like a light period cramp. I say a lighter  type of period cramp. Anything more painful then that I would have checked out immediatly. I have been having some BH lately and they are only a tiny bit uncomfortable. I have also been experiencing some nasty constipation and that is quite a bit more uncomfortable.
  • Thank you ladies. I waited it out and it went away. Throughout the night I had more pain but have not had it this morning. I have an appointment tomorrow so I am going to ask the doc.

At 26 weeks, I have never had such pain while PG. Of course there will be pan during labor but that was crazy!

     I appreciate all your advice.

  • I'd go... This may be your appendix. I had sharp pains on the right side last week and I had to get tests done to rule out appendicitis. If you didn't go last night, I'd call your DR. today! Good luck!!

Mine ended up being BH/RLP. Hope you get the same answer!

  • Sounds like round ligament pain to me, but if you're concerned then I would call your OB (good way to figure out whether you need to be seen).
