Water for Elephants book vs. movie (spoilers)

DH and I saw Water for Elephants last night after we both read the book.  I enjoyed it, but as usual with a book-turned-movie, there was so much missing and quite a bit of change.  Most of it didn't bother me too much, except for one part.  In the book, Jacob absolutely refused to leave the circus because he was afraid of what might happen to Rosie, Camel, and Walter.  I was pretty surprised at the movie that they had him jumping the train with Marlena without giving so much as a thought to leaving them all behind.  The only reason they returned and ended up keeping Rosie in the end was because they were caught in the hotel room.  It seems odd to me that they would change such a major demonstration of his strong, committed character.  It just really rubbed me the wrong way.  Any other thoughts on the book and/or movie?

I actually liked the movie better because I though they developed the romance better than the book, and I liked that they didn't cut out to present day so often.  Obviously, there were a lot of things left out of the movie.  I did, however, expect August to be more violent and mean in the movie.

I did like how they started with elderly Jacob visiting the circus, rather than saving it for the end, and was relieved that they didn't jump back and forth in time throughout the movie.  I was also surprised at August's lack of a temper, although the scene with him lashing out at Rosie had me in tears.  There were just some major changes that had me kind of surprised; for example, no Uncle Al?  I did prefer it without him, but thought it was strange to remove such a big character.

  • I love this book and have read it twice.  I thought it was weird that for the movie, they merged Uncle Al and August into one character.  The scene where they jumped the train also bugged me a bit too, as did the fact that they completely cut out the character Greg (the bull trainer) and made Jacob Rosie's trainer instead.  They did take a few liberties with the movie, but all in all, I think they stayed fairly true to the story and did a good job with it.
