So when to worry about kid not keeping down fluids?

DD hasn't kept down water all day.  We really have never dealt with this.  Is this something she needs to be seen for today or can it wait til tomorrow or even longer?  When do we know to take her in (other than her being lethargic, which I would take her in right away for coupled with the puking).  I feel like such a newb!

  • if she hasn't peed in 12 hours, has no tears, or just seems loopy from dehydration.

She hasn't peed since last night we think...no way to tell if she had peed when she had diarrhea.  But she has tears for sure.  Thanks!

  • We were told not to go in as long as her skin was still springing back (grab a little on her hand - if it doesn't go right back into place, she's getting severely dehydrated) and if she was still peeing on a regular basis. If she went longer than 8 hours with no peeing, we were to go in immediately. If her eyes started to look sunken and if her breathing became rapid were two more signs that we needed to take her in.
  • I wouldn't wait for the absence of tears.  If you don't think she's peed in that long with vomiting PLUS diarrhea I'd at least call.

This is what I do. For pee I count (per the pedi) anything over 1 teaspoon. As long as some liquid is making it's way through I try not to worry too much. So if she's had diarrhea I wouldn't worry too much because I'd figure she peed at least a little at that time. You can also look in her mouth to see whether she has any or much saliva.

:lurking: Have you tried pedialyte? Sometimes even water can be rough on an upset stomach. Try 1 tsp of fluids and if she keeps it down for 15 min, repeat. They lose fluids very quickly through diarrhea. If she hasn't peed since last night, I'd take her in for an IV. Hope she feels better soon! Stomach bugs are the worst.

  • another indicator is eyes looking sunken in and extra dark underneath.

ice chips and ice pops are a good way to try to slowing get a little liquid in when they can't drink water, etc.
