Hello ladies!!! Once again I need to apologize that I did not finish the book in time. I am around 400 pages into it, and loving every moment of it. I was just way too busy this month to finish it. I am so very sorry. I feel like a bad book club, um, moderator?
Hopefully you ladies can keep the discussion going. I will check back in with this thread as soon as I finish the book. With a long car trip tomorrow, I might knock a lot of it out then.
Well, since I didn't finish it... I'll just start us off with a simple question.
Do you remember where you were, or how old you were when Columbine happened?
I was a senior in high school. I don't really remember where I was, maybe I was just returning home from school. I do remember things that happened because of Columbine though. The bullying issue was changed to zero tollarance. Although, I don't remember it being that bad anyways. We were not allowed to bring backpacks to school anymore. If we did they had to be clear or mesh backpacks. That's still in effect today. A good friend of mine also put together a candlelight ceremony. It was a great way to honor the families.
I hope you all are enjoying your holiday!
Re: >> MAY BOOK CLUB DISCUSSION <<
Sorry ladies I got stuck at work late and missed the begining of the discussion. I also though am not finished with the book, I think I'm about 500 pages into it. Been trying to catch up but didnt get it quite done.
I remember Columbine very well. I went to high school just 9 miles from Columbine. I was a junior when Columbine happened and we were at lunch down the street when we noticed lots of fire trucks and ambulances going by and knew something must have happened. By the time we got back to school after lunch the school was on lockdown and we quickly learned what happened. The rest of the day was spent huddled in classrooms watching the news, so many people knew people who went to school there so there were many tears. It all seems surreal looking back. Our school did a walk to the school to show support for the day the memorial was held. Going to school in the same county as Columbine meant that security was forever changed at school. We never really had any security before. After, only one door was open into school and we had to check in and out everyday.
I was a junior in high school, but I don't really remember anything specific about that day. I know afterwards, all the school doors were locked during the day except the one by the office, and they had a visitor check-in policy. My parents and older brother actually lived in Littleton before I was born.
Have you ladies read any of Wally Lamb's other books? I absolutely LOVED I Know This Much is True and She's Come Undone, and I was a bit disappointed by this one. I felt like this one was all over the place, and a little contrived by adding in some true life elements with the fiction. I still enjoyed it, but not as much as I'd hoped to.
