How did this happen to me?

I have been MIA for a while... I have been struggling with PostPartum depression and it has really hit hard. I never thought I would be affected but I was not fortunate enough to avoid it. This is the most difficult thing I have ever been faced with byfar and I only pray that I will get through this soon. As soon as I felt something wasn't right, I went to my doc and he's prescribed Zoloft. My first couple of days on it were awful. Nausea, extreme fatigue, dizziness, complete loss of appetite... So I stopped but my doc insists I continue. I am so very freaked out by all of this and wish more than anything there were a quick fix. DH is going away until Tuesday and my mother in law is going to help me care for Sophia while I try to restart the meds. I am dreading it... Wasn't fun feeling like a zombie but i have to try to get this in check. I am afraid of the toll this may take on my relationship with my husband as well. He is pretty freaked out about it and he's stand offish when we talk about it. Ladies, if any of you are worried you may be going through the same thing, read Brooke Shields' book and talk to your doc. Wish me luck.

    What type of symptoms were you having Sara? Has the medication helped at all?

  • I'm sorry that you are going through this! It's not easy.

    It took my so long to figure out what was wrong when I had my first. This time I started Zoloft right away. It makes such a difference with me, no zombie feelings here. Maybe they have you on too strong a dosage? Or maybe it's just not the right stuff for you.

    I hope that you start to feel better soon!! I know that the meds made such a difference for me and make me so much more emotionally stable!

    Good luck to you!

  • Oh honey, thank goodness for your MIL helping with Sophia. I hope that the Zoloft helps. I have heard from a few of my friends having some of the same symptoms when they first started on different anti-depressants, but they do go away. I hope the symptoms go away quickly for you, I'll be thinking of you!

    I would definitely check with your doctor about other options, especially if its not helping or making things worse! I hope things look better for you soon!!!

  • Oh wow, you are in my thoughts.  I'm glad you will have help next week.  I can't imagine how you are feeling, and thanks for being so open with us.  PPD is a big fear of mine (my sister had it) and I really feel for anyone who has to go through it.  Hopefully things will get better for you very soon!

    It can truly happen to anyone. I am sorry you are not feeling full support from your DH. Thankfully you have recognized it and are getting help. Hopefully all will resolve with the proper medication and or therapy. You are definitely in my thoughts.

  • So sorry you're going through this :(.  I had PPD with DS1 (not diagnosed until he was 14 months old though I had it from the time he was born) and know how awful it can be.

    I'd recommend seeing a psychiatrist who specializes in PPD if you're not already or at the very least, any psychiatrist over an OB/midwife.  There are so many options as far as medication goes and having someone on your team who's an expert in them can make all the difference.

    I'm on zoloft now and it's done amazing things for me, but I've been on other antidepressants before and had bad side effects.  I agree that it sounds like your dosage might be off or you might just need to try another med altogether.

    ::hugs:: It WILL get better.

  • Oh I'm so sorry Sara. Its hard. I got really depressed and anxious even before Eliza was born. I hope the zoloft works for you once your body gets acclimated to it. Those types of drugs need to build up in your system for them to work. Good luck.
