Anyone had a UTI, taken Ampicillin? Scared and need Help...

Hi Ladies!

I was on here a few weeks ago asking for some help with my resistance to taking Macrobid. I am so grateful to all of you that replied with such caring and helpful support, it helped me make the decision to take it. God truly worked through you all to help one scared Mommy :)

My new issue is that I took the Macrobid for 5 days, 2 weeks ago as my Dr. ordered to treat a Urinary Tract Infection I was told I had. ( I've never had one before this in my life) Now, after I completed the Antibiotics my urine was tested again and it tested positive. My Dr. prescribed Ampicllin 500 mg. 4x a day. Needless to say I freaked out. I am 35 weeks pregnant and cannot bear the thought of taking any medication because I am fearful it will hurt my baby. I lost my first Baby at nearly 10 weeks and I took medicine to treat Bronchitis at about 8 weeks pregnant with that Angel, and although everyone including the Dr. tells me that is was Chromosomal ( and I know my Angel is in God's care now) it instilled a fear for medications in me.

I currently have to have NST's done twice a week because I have GD. on 5/21 my urine came back positive for a UTI so they sent it for a culture analysis and it was positive. I tested in office again on 5/25 and it was negative. Then again yesterday in offce on 5/27 and it was negative. I have NO symptoms of a UTI , and the Dr. said that it could be a contaminant that was on my skin that caused the 5/21 urinalysis to be positive. He believes I should take the antibiotic just in case I have a UTI, because if a UTI is left untreated then it can lead to Sepsis, Kidney Infection, and it can infect the baby. I am so confused as to what to do. My question is if you took a round of Antibiotics already, had 2 negative urinalysis' after you were diagnosed, and have no symptoms would you take the medication because your Dr. thinks its best? I really trust my Dr. but my instinct is to not medicate my baby and I right now. Has anyone taken Ampicillin this far along? Has anyone had a UTI with no symptoms? We are praying about this. Thank you for any help you can offer me. God Bless you all and your Miracle :)

  • I would say take the medication. I haven't had to take any of the medications that you're talking about but I think it's important that you take care of yourself. I'm pretty sure that the medication is fine and if you don't you could run into the other problems you listed (which are far worse than an UTI). I wish you the best.

  • Take the meds. An untreated UTI is more harmful to the baby than taking a pregnancy safe medication.

  • Sometimes UTIs are harder to knock out than with just one round of antibiotics so doctors will try a different one. Ampicillin is a penicillin based antibiotic so is probably one of the safer ones you can take. PP are right... not treating the UTI will be more dangerous for you and the baby than the medication. Your doctor is not going to prescribe something that is not safe for you to take while pregnant.

  • Take the antibiotic. If you come down with sepsis, it could kill both you and your baby. It's a no-brainer.

  • I have not been in your situation, but I would follow my doctor's directions.

  • As an L&D nurse, I can tell you Ampicillin is perfectly safe -- often used as a pre-op antibiotic for those having c-sections.  Also sometimes used to treat GBS if the patient is allergic to penicillin.  It's not going to hurt the baby, I promise.

  • Why are you relying more on what people on an internet message board say than what your doctor says?  If you have questions about taking this antibiotic, call your doctor and discuss it.  He has an emergency number and you can call that to get clarification.  He also wouldn't have prescribed it to you if it was not safe to take in pregnancy.

Yes   Furthermore, Amp IS safe in pregnancy!! UTI's, or even asymptomatic bacteriuria, is NOT safe in pregnancy! This is a no-brainer. Listen to your doctor, not random strangers on a message board.

  • I'm in a similar situation.  I had 5 UTIs during this pregnancy.  I did Macrobid as well and it didn't kick it.  I did a week of the 500 mg Ampicillin 4x a day, and have been on 250mg 1x a day ever since as a maintenance medication.  My urologist & OB said it's safe and they'd rather me be on this than risk getting yet another infection that could be more harmful to the baby.  I just saw my urologist on Friday and he said that when I have the baby I can stop taking it.

I second what the other ladies said--trust the people who went to school for this! :)
