I was just reading the post about the bumper pads for cribs... one of the moms mentioned something about more stuff to wash..
I just wanted to suggest something(non bumper pad related) that worked really well for us when our boys were little. We would take one of our really big receiving blankets, fold it in half and put it over the crib mattress and tuck it into the sides (like you would a top sheet) that way if the baby got sick or had an explosive diaper durring the night, we didn't have to disrupt the baby and strip the whole bed! We just had to take off the receiving blanket! That was really one of the best pieces of advice I was given! So much easier than trying to strip the crib sheet, mattress cover and everything else when the baby is trying to sleep!!!!!
Hope that helps some of you!
Re: Just a suggestion...
Can't say I have experience since this is our first, but the Baby Bargains book which has helped me plan a lot of what we plan to get recommends the Ultimate Crib Sheet for this purpose. It doesn't add too much bulk/softness to become a SIDS risk, but is an extra sheet that is waterproof itself. It's $20 and available at all the main baby stores so that's what I plan to use.

This is what I did also. Worked really well for those middle of the night sheet changes.
and after 82 days in the NICU, our little girl is home!
That way, you have two layers and just have to pull off the top layer of sheets and then you already have a clean layer below. You wouldn't have to scramble in the middle of the night to find a mattress pad and sheet and change the crib.
To add to this, if the baby has pooped/spit up/vomited all over the crib, chances are it is awake already and you would need to remove them from the crib anyways. It's just a time is of the essence thing. It sucks trying to get a crib completely changed at 3am when you are barely awake and can hardly see because you don't want to turn the lights on and wake your already cranky baby up even more than necessary.
Like someone else said, I'm not keen on the idea of a blanket just sitting on there, not fitted, but we did put a fitted mattress pad, then a sheet, then another mattress pad, and another sheet over that, so we only had to remove on sheet and mattress pad if there was puke or poop or whatever.
I like this idea, thats why I'm adding several waterproof mattress pads and plenty of fitted sheets to my registry.
Potentially dumb question alert: does having that many extra blankets on there add too much to the fluffiness of the mattress? I read you're supposed to keep it as firm as possible.
