This is my first baby, and no one has really been able to explain contractions to me. Can you physically see your stomach contracting as well as feel it? What do they feel like? Thanks.
I struggled with the same question. However, now I notice that normally my stomach (even though hard) has a little give when you push on it. When it's a contraction, the entire stomach gets super rock-hard. Also, recently sometimes I have period-like cramps at the same time as my stomach getting rock-hard.
I'm not too worried about not being able to tell exactly when I'm contracting though ... when the real thing comes, I'm positive there will be no mistaking them!

Last time I couldn't see them, only felt them. To me they felt like the most intense period cramps ever in a rythemic pattern; a definite beginning and end.

With DS1 I didn't notice. DS2 I have been having out of control BH's and when monitored they are off the charts. My stomach gets very hard, I get a little short of breath, and I can see mine. DS2 sits to the left side of my stomach so that side gets bigger when it contracts. MIL says she can see my stomach get hard from across the room. Also LO is still while it's happening and then goes crazy baby after it stops.

According the US tech at one of my NST's she said I was having one b/c my abdomen looked balled up in only one area. I always thought it was just baby bunching up in the uterus but maybe not. Sometimes I see my abdomen doing the same thing and know its baby b/c I feel it moving and othertimes it just happens and I feel no baby movement. I'm not sure what the true answer is. Maybe!
