Babies on the Brain

Give it to me straight BOTB.

I should be cleared to work out after my 6 week pp appointment next week.

I'm thinking of training for a triathalon.  It's July 31st.  500 meter swim, 13.8 mile bike and 3 mile run.

Have I lost my ever loving mind?  Am I going to die on the side of the road somewhere in the Texas Hill Country halfway through the triathalon?  Or is it feasible that I can train for this in 2 months?

Re: Give it to me straight BOTB.

  • How good of a shape were you in pre-pg? Would you have been pretty much triathalon-ready in less than 2 months of training?

    How do you feel now?

July 20th, 2012: Never forget the day the fb douchebags tried so hard, but ultimately failed. Viva la October 2011! Yeah, I called you douchebags.

  • I don't know how I'd have the time to train that intense.  If you have the time, then I say go for it.  It is all I can do to fit in the 30DS though.

  • I started running in mid March and just now hit the 5 mile mark.  I cannot imagine running 3 after swimming & biking...but that's me.  I was pretty out of shape.

What were you doing before?  How do you feel?  (I guess ditto Aardvark)

  • depending on your level of activity now, that seems doable. You probably won't like any part of it but being able to say you finished lol, but definitely doable assuming your athletic abilities involve more than just being able to change the channel like a champ.

  • As previous posts, what were you doing before/during pregnancy?  Were you pretty active exercise-wise?  I don't know about a triathalon that soon.  Maybe if it was late August/September but that's just me.  It's a do-able goal if you're able to put in the training.  Good luck!

  • Ohandalso, I think it is fabulous that you are so motivated and are setting awesome goals.  If you feel ready, I say go for it.

My post sounded negative when I re-read it.  Don't let my couch-potato channel-changing-champ starting point influence you one bit.

  • I was doing some running (had started the C25k) and biked a 25 mile ride without much training before getting pregnant with Gabe.  The hardest part for me would be training for the swimming.  I'm a good swimmer, but I haven't swam in ages, and I'm not sure where I would go to train for that part.

PP-wise, I'm feeling back to my normal self and have been for a couple weeks now.  I've been getting out and walking around the neighborhood during the day with Isaac in the stroller.

I'm scared because aside from the 25 mile bike ride, I've never signed up to do something like this.  But on the other hand, I wonder if committing to something like this will help me stick with a workout regimen.

ETA: That should read-   I was doing some running before getting pregnant with Isaac.

  • Oh, and I should add, I'm not even going to think about time. My goal would be to finish. And like pp's said, I fully expect it to suck royally while I'm doing it, lol.

  • If you are comfortable with the overall distance(s) and are a fairly decent swimmer, I think you'll def. finish.

How much time can you dedicate to training?

If you do it, there's no way you can suck. It would be impossible to suck while doing a Triathalon 3 months PP. There's no way. If you think you can do it, then go for it!

  • I would fall over dead less than 10 minutes in.

I think it's awesome that you are even considering it. I ditto everyone else. GL!

  • If you are feeling it, do it!  Just to complete a triathalon would be an awesome accomplishment no matter when you finish, esp to just have given birth.  Hoping and praying that the humidity is less than 10%.  I would die...I don't even remember what humidity feels like right now!!!!

  • I'm going to say "you crazy!"  Only becuase, while I thought I was ok and back to 100% after A...I really wasn't.  I think its too soon and I would worry that it would be too much for your body... Just my two cents.

I also want to say that its awesome you want to do it; I'm jealous becuase I couldn't do that now!

  • Lol Twinkle! The humidity is never less than 10% here! It will probably be somewhere around 80%.

I looked up more info and if I wait until the last minute to register, its only $10 more than registering now. So maybe I'll just start training and see how I feel.

  • Are you a swimmer? Or have any experience with swimming? If not that is going to be a huge challenge to be ready for in 2 months. Most people can bike 13 miles without too much effort if they they train for a month or so (assuming you haven't been completely sedentary) and you can train for a 3 mile run in 2 months easy.

I've never swam competitively, and I haven't swam recently, but I've swam a 500 several times without preparation in the past.  Granted, I was swimming regularly at the time, but I'm still pretty confident I could do the swimming given the prep time.

But after talking to my friend, we won't be doing that triathalon.  He pointed out to me that DH's 40th b-day is the night before and neither one of us will ber wanting to get our butts up that early after the party.  I'll look for one later in the year.
