Enlarged Brain Ventricles

Hello ladies. I was advised to come see if any of you had any advice.

We had our first ultra sound today, and found out it was a boy. But a couple hours later my OB called with results from the Radiologist. Apparently the Radiologist thinks one or more (was not given details yet) of our baby boy's brain ventricles is measuring too large. My OB was off today and called me anyways, and now I am freaking out. She said it is possible the baby won't make it full term. And I am not even sure what that means.

Wondering if any of you ladies have any experience/advice. TIA.

My sister and I had the same happen in both our pregnancies. Here are our stories:

    My sister:

Baby's ventricles measured 11mm at most during the whole pregancy. Anything over 10mm is considered enlarged. She had an ultrasound to monitor any changes. There never were any and my nephew was born with no issues whatsoever. Given that he sometimes measured as little as 8mm I chalk it up to ultrasounds not giving an exact measurement and it depends on the tech.

    Myself:

At our 18 week ultrasound they found one severely enlarged vetricle (i think it was 15mm) and one moderately enlarged ventricle (12.5mm). They also found club feet. They said either one on it's own wouldn't be THAT much of a concern but both together suggested a chromosomal disorder. After a few more weeks we opted for amniocentesis and she was diagnosed with congenital myotonic dystrophy. They gave us the otion to terminate which we declined. She was born at full term. Perfectly healthy to this day (aside from club feet and low muscle tone, which is no big dea when looking at the big picture).

So, as you can see, we both had good outcomes. I don't know if the explained anything to you about ventricles but when ventricles (fluid filled areas in the brain) are enlarged it can indicate that the brain is not growing as it should, thus allowing the ventricles to grow larger. A lot of the time it corrects itself.

I know it's nearly impossible but try not to worry until you talk to the professionals again and get a little more in depth with what they found.

    Good luck to you!

oh, and congrats on your little boy!!!
  • My son had slightly enlarged ventricles in all his ultrasounds.  He was born with DS so we had a good outcome too :)  I will be sending T&P's your way!
Joshua 1:9 - "Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.
  • DH and I had our anatomy scan 2 weeks ago and from that my OB sent us for further testing at the High Risk OB for Amnio and ultrasound. Our babies ventricles are enlarged due to him having Spina Bifida and commonly amoungst those children with SB their ventricles are enlarged due to hydrocephalous(water on the brain).

Good Luck if you have any further questions just ask. T&P to you and LO
