pool appropriate life jackets

for those of you who use life jackets or the like in pools, what do you use?  i've seen different things around and wasn't sure what is best.  i have always been opposed to floating assistance in a pool. at the lake and they wear standard life jackets.

our swim lessons just ended and lily rocked it but eve did not grasp the concept.  at all.  for reals the girl just couldn't put 2 and 2 together and now i'm completely worried about her at the pool, but she is also now much more apprehensive about water than she was before- her healthy fear has definitely kicked in.

i'll continue to work with her on it, but with 3 at the pool by myself, i just think eve may need to wear something in the deep pool (not kiddie)

what do you guys recommend?  puddle jumpers (are those allowed at pools? are they coast guard approved??) or just stick with a standard life jacket?

Re: pool appropriate life jackets

  • We don't use it at the pool, but we bought and used a puddle jumper life jacket for Babytaffy to use in Hawaii when he was a little older than Eve.  It is Coast Guard approved, which I was insistent on having - no way I was letting my baby into the ocean without adequate protection.  :)

They were difficult to find a couple years ago (I think we found one either at Academy or online somewhere, I don't remember which).  I know I saw them last weekend at Leslie's Pool Supply and maybe at Target too.

I don't know if you have it in the budget (time or moneywise), but would it be helpful to sign her up for another session of swim lessons?  We ended up doing two consecutive sessions (so a full month of 4 day/week classes) for Babytaffy last year.  He just didn't get it the first time, didn't really want to be in the water, and spent most of the first session either sitting out of the pool with only his feet in the water or hanging over the edge of the pool on his tummy with his toes in the water and his head hidden in his hands.  He had new teachers the second time, was more familiar with what they were going to ask him to do, and everything clicked for him.  He happily jumped in the water, went underwater voluntarily, and now will jump into the "deep" (4 foot) part of the pool and swim to the side or out to one of us.  It was really amazing what an extra set of lessons did for him.  I really wanted him to have some skills before the baby came, and it worked.  This year I can take both him and the baby and feel calm having them both in the water.

  • DS wears a little Speedo life jacket at the pool.  It's a great size/shape for a toddler - he moves around easily and doesn't seem to notice he even has it on after awhile.  I found it on Amazon.

  • i think eve just needs more time, she turned 2 last month and lily had great success with her first lessons, but she was closer to 3. eve was in the water- these were 1on1 lessons.  she will put her face/head under just fine, but if you let go of her in the water she doesn't kick or use her arms.  she sinks/floats.

i think we need another child lifejacket for the lakehouse anyway, so maybe i'll try that first then go with the puddle jumper if she isn't happy.

    thanks girls!
