My EDD is 5/31 (Tuesday). At my appointment today, the MD discussed that since my BP has been climbing, protein in my urine, and the fact that I've been fainting we needed to consider induction.
He was very honest that since I have had NO cervical changes (0 effacement, 0 dilation), I may fail a trial of labor and end up with a c-section. However, he felt that the benefits outweigh the risks. So I am now scheduled for an induction on 6/1. I'll go in the night before for Cervadil and start Pitocin in the am if my cervix has finally decided to cooperate.
Honestly, I'm sad that this is not the birth I imagined. But I'm willing to do anything to have a healthy baby. Can someone please tell me some positive induction stories where the mom to be started off with absolutely no cervical ripening?
Thanks!
Re: Need good stories re: induction with no cervical changes
I didn't have zero cervical changes, but was a fingertip and 80% (had been this way since at least 36 weeks). After my water breaking Friday afternoon and still having no contractions by Saturday night, I had cervadil and was expected to have it work while I slept. However, about 45 minutes after getting the cervadil I started having contractions 2-3 minutes apart. I ended up needing some pitocin around 7am since contractions were starting to decrease in timing (7 cm at this point). Lila was born at 9:21am after 19 minutes of pushing.
Not quite the same as you, but a fairly positive labor story (I was hoping for a completely natural birth).
I was induced with DS for medical reason at 40 weeks 4 days, I was 0 cm, 0% and he had not descended into my pelvis.
Was sent in on a Friday around 12 noon. After monitoring, triage, etc I was started on Pitocin around 3. They next inserted a foley cathether to put pressure on my cervix and cause it to dilate, since DS hadn't descended. This took awhile to work, but once it came out I was 3 cm. They upped my Pitocin and once I got to 5 or 6 cm my OB was able to break my water (couldn't before then because DS was still too high and there was an increased risk of cord prolapse). Shortly after that I requested my epi- had it placed but it didn't work. 3 hours later I was able to get it re-placed. In that 3 hours I have never experienced pain so bad in my life. DS was sunny-side up so I had back labor. My body reacting pretty severely to the pain- I vomited several times, my blood pressure dropped super low and they had to push fluids through my IV and give me medication to get it back up. I'm told I was ashen and grey in appearance and I literally could not speak or respond when spoken to. Once the second epi was placed it was wonderful- I could still feel every contraction and pressure, but no pain. Shortly after that I was checked and was at 9cm. Shortly after that i noticed a LOT of pressure and was ready to push. I pushed for 2.5 hours and continued to vomit throughout. I did end up having to have an episiotomy because DS was 9 lbs 5 oz and my OB thought it best. It healed fine and I had no complications from it.
All in all, this was a 51 hour process. A couple additional things that sucked- I had skipped breakfast the day I was sent to the hospital so I hadn't eaten in 3 days; they wouldn't let me shower; and once my foley cath was out and they upped my Pitocin I had to use a bed pan.
So, obviously not fun but in the end I had a healthy baby and we were both safe and I was able to birth him vaginally.
I was induced at 39w1d about 2 weeks ago. I was basically at a 0 (the 2 OBs were in disagreement between a 0 and a 1). I had GD and was being induced early due to that.
I went in the night before and they started me on a different drug than cervadil... it started with a M, but can't remember it off hand. I got a half a dose about 8:30pm and they said they would see where it went. By 2 am the contractions (really bad cramps) were causing me a lot of pain so they gave me a drug called newbayne or something like that to help me rest and sleep. At this point I was at a 3.
At 5:45am the doctor came in and I was at about a 4. They said I could have an other round but I suggested starting the pit and going with the epi at that point since I didn't want to miss my window. They did that and then broke my water at about 7:30 (when I had progressed to a 5. They told me they would check me again at 9:30am and to let them know if I felt the urge to push at all because they were turning up the pit a little bit.
At 9:20 I started to feel the need to push. Of course, this was as my doctor was delivering another lady who had been in active labor for about 36 hours or something so I had to wait a bit. He came in at 9:45 (which felt like an eternity) and he confirmed I was at a 10 and ready to start pushing.
I started pushing about 9:50am and had our son at 10:20am. Everything was fine and he was healthy. I had a 2nd degree tear.
So I guess I had a good induction.
It was painful and very tough for sure but everyone I have talked to IRL has said that pushing for 30 minutes for our first baby was amazing and I should be very glad. My doctor said the same. He had originally said at 7:30am that based on my progress he was expecting an afternoon baby, but things went a little faster than expected.
GL and I hope all goes well! Even if it is a long labor, it sounds like it is necessary due to your BP issues so know that it is right for your baby.
I was induced at 37w6d for the same reasons you were - plus DD had IUGR and was measuring 5lbs (3-5%). I went in at 7pm on a Thursday and started Cervadil. 8am Friday - no change at all. We started Pit at 10am on Friday, and I was on it until 8pm that Friday night...no change at all. I did another round of Cervadil Friday night beginning at 9pm, and they took it out at 7am on Saturday - I was fingertip to 1cm dilated, 50% effaced (ugh!). We started pit at 8am on Saturday. At 12pm I started having noticable contractions. At 1:30 I was 1 cm and doc broke my water - pit was at the max and contrax were every 1.5-2 minutes. Won't lie - worst pain ever with these contractions. Lasted till 3pm and begged for an epidural; got the epidural at 4pm. 5pm I was 5cm and 100% effaced. 10pm I was 8cm. Midnight I was complete and I labored down so as to not push for too long and get tired. 2am I started pushing at DD was born at 2:37am on that Sunday.
Total induction and labor took 55.5 hours and I fought for many consessions from the docs in order to deliver DD vaginally.
Now for my tips:
