Pregnant after 35

Am I being overly cautious about travel?

I am struggling to decide what to do about our babymoon in July when I will be around 25 weeks.  We were planning to go to one of the West Indies islands, but now I am hesitant to go somewhere without easy access to good hospitals or to flights to the US, especially since Baby Haribo will be viable then.  Do you think I am overthinking this?  I am considering staying somewhere closer like Mexico (where I can easily go to Texas or California) or to Puerto Rico (short flight to NYC).  Am I crazy?  I would really appreciate your thoughts.  DH thinks I am being overly cautious, especially since we have always wanted to go to this island. However, I feel these locations will always be there and we can go another time.   I would appreciate honest opinions.

Re: Am I being overly cautious about travel?

  • Personally, I would be feeling cautious as well and would not want to travel that far, "just in case" but I will preface this by saying that I am in protective mode right now.  Have you talked to your doctor about it to get their opinion?  That might be helpful and could provide some useful insight.  We traveled only to Wisconsin around that same time and I talked with my doctors about some of the pros and cons of even going that short distance.

  • I travel quite a bit with work and the doctor grounded me at 27 weeks.  She said I could clear short flights with her, but that I should make sure that work knows she won't release me to fly across the country after 27 weeks.  So, I would definitely talk to your doctor about it before you decide anything.
  • Check with your doctor, I'd think.  I had to travel to France early last month, and I was nervous about it.  My doctor cleared me to go (it was a death in the family) but said the sooner the better, and after 30 weeks I probably shouldn't go anywhere.

  • i was just about 29-30 weeks when we went on our baby moon.  went to vieques, PR and virgin gorda, BVI.  i guess i'm not much of a worrier.  you have to do what makes you comfortable tho.
  • Some airlines don't allow you to fly once you are 7 months. I would check with your Dr. and your airline. Personally, I wouldn't fly that late in pregnancy.

  • I went to India and Nepal at 30 weeks.  BUT India's health care system is actually one of the best in the world, if you are insured/can pay for health care so that was not as of large a concern as one might think.  I think if you are comfortable with it going to Caribbean is fine, particularly if you went somewhere like Puerto Rico.  Just get travel insurance as soon as you book your flight, including medical evac-this will cover an emergency private flight back to a first world hospital.  You need to get the insurance right away so it will cover a pre-existing condition (pregnancy). They can fly you to Florida a heck of a lot quicker than NY from there if need be.  I had no problem with airlines and brought a note from my doc just in case.
  • Great suggestion about travel insurance and medvac.  Thank you!

What island are you hoping to go to?  There are direct flights to St. Martin/Sint Maarten, which is kind of a cool place to hang out for a while, and you can do easy connecting flights from there.  Also, Barbados has direct flights from the US.  I've spent some time on most of the islands in the Eastern Caribe and would be happy to give an opinion about whether I would want to be on any specific island if I should need need medical help.
