Odd Question: Trash

How many bags of trash do you throw out a week?

Fridays are trash day for us- I was out this morning taking the kids for a walk and some families/houses but their cans out to the curb (all houses have their own sheds (for lack of better terms) that the cans go in- and the trash people come to each house for pickup) ~ I was really surprised by how many bags of trash some families had. ... and they didn't put out any recycles (same day for us).

So I know that since we SAH- there is naturally more trash that accumulates- so how many bags on average do you throw out? Do you recycle?

Re: Odd Question: Trash

  • Ususally 2 bags per week. We recycle everything we can - we are lucky that we have single stream recycling and HUGE recycling toters (much bigger than our trashcans) - we recycle all paper, cardboard, plastic, and cans.

I have a major pet peeve against people who don't recycle. Just saying,

  • We generally accumulate 4-5 tall kitchen bags worth of trash in a week, but 2 of those bags are usually diapers.

    ETA: We also recycle.

  • Our trash cans are VERY small compared to our green bins and recycle bins.  We throw out about 2 bags of garbage and a bag of cat litter per week (9 indoor cats means a lot of litter garbage).  We are talking 5 gallon garbage bags.

    We recycle everything.

  • We do recycle and we have, on average, one bag a day.  Sometimes two if the diaper champs are needing changed... we change DD's once a week and DS's about every 4 days.

  • We have one large trash can, and an equally large recycling can.  Both are completely filled on trash/recycling pick-up day, which is Friday.  I'd say we take out about 4-5 bags of trash a week (including diapers for two kids), and probably 3-4 bags of recycling (newspapers, magazines, flattened cardboard boxes, milk carton, bottles, cans, etc.)

  • We are a large family and have about 4 bags. We don't recycle. Recycling hasn't come all the way back since the hurricane, but since parts of the city have it I am hoping soon we will have it again!

  • We have 2 bags a week (2 pickups- so one bag each time) and we recycle EVERYTHING- my neighborhood recycles just about everything and I have about 3 very large tubs (the big ones with the hands- that you used to put beer on ice in when we were in college) in addition to the 'issued' retangular recycle bin

  • We recycle and we still produce a ton of garbage.  It is really depressing.  We fill both large bins every week (our trash day is Friday too).  I recycle as much as I can, and sort things from the other trash cans in the house.  Large garbage wise, (like the kind that fit in the kitchen trash), I'd say we produce at least 5 a week.  :(

Our trash is 2x a week, Monday and Thursday with recycling pick up on Thursday. I have usually 1 bag on Monday and maybe 2 on Thursday. I also recycle a lot. I get really annoyed when the recycling guy doesn't show up (happens when it rains, he doesn't come into my neighborhood, grrrr).

Anyway, my neighbor across the street is a SAHM as well and has 3 kids. They put out like 3 cans full of trash (usually overflowing) 2x a week. They don't recycle. I am amazed at the amount of trash they put out.

Now the weekend my DH is home (he is only home 3 days a month), there is more garbage, but that is because he is usually repairing something around the house or doing yardwork and we can put our yard depris in our garbage as long as it fits in the large container they have given us for that.

  • We put out maybe 2 large bags of trash every week.  We recycle as much as we possible can and I have asked for a compost bin for my birthday so we can throw away even less (wow, reading that, I sound like a huge nerd).

When I was out running this week, it was recycle and trash day and I was seriously annoyed by how many people don't recycle in my neighborhood.  I really don't understand why people don't.  It's included in our HOA dues and we can recycle just about everything.  People are just lazy.  I would say probably 95% of my neighborhood doesn't recycle.

  • About 1-2 kitchen bags full per week (not exactly sure, since we throw them in the dumpster outside our condo as soon as they are full, instead of having a once per week trash day).

We recycle everything we can, use cloth diapers, and have a worm bin for some food scraps (they don't eat a ton, though.  Someday I'd like to have a large compost bin).

  • It really varies for us.  But we have a recycle bin that is the same size as our trash bin and it is usually full each week.  We have trash pick-up twice a week and recycling once a week.

  • about a bag a day. dd's still in diapers/pullups, too, so that adds to the trash. we don't have recycling here (like at the curb). i save cans to drop off, and cardboard, newspapers, and paper to take the the recycling bin at the elementary school, but that's it.

  • We have a recycle bucket that we recycle paper, nonreturnable cans and bottles.  Then we usually have 2 Hefty bags per week.
  • For trash we average two 13 gallon kitchen bags plus a sleeve of diaper genie dirty diapers/pull-ups per week.  Our recycling usually fills a 30 gallon can and sometimes also the standard issue small recycling tote.  (The town used to issue small totes but has switched to "use any container if it has a recycling sticker on it.")

  • 2 bags a week. We recycle what we can but recycling costs more than trash service here by a lot. I do compost so that cuts the food trash.
  • We don't have recycling in my town. But within one week, we fill up one rolling trash can (so maybe 4-5 bags of trash).

  • We throw out one tall kitchen bag a week.  Sometimes we have party and it's more, but 90% of the time just the one.

We do recycle, one full-ish bin each week for paper and one bin for cans/glass/plastics.

ETA: plus one bag of cat litter a week.

A charge for recycling?  That totally sucks!  I've never heard of that before.

  • We have one standard sized garbage can that is between 3/4ths full and full every week. DS is still in diapers so that is a factor in our trash. We recycle everything our community will accept (cans, paper/cardboard, and some plastics.)

  • Here in California, composting and recycling is FREE and unlimited.  Trash cans are super $$$$ expensive so, it's not the norm to throw out more than 1-2 bags per week, just based on cost alone!

We of course had 2+ bags when Emily was in diapers but rarely have more than 1 bag of trash per week now.

We have recycling pick up once a month and it's a really big can.  We recycle everything and we tie up newspaper, junk mail and cardboard.

Our regular garbage can is a small one and gets picked up once per week.  It's usually, at most, half full.  We make very little garbage and I guess I change diapers less than most people!  I use grocery store bags in a small can in the kitchen and we throw that out every 1-2 days.  I usually only use the diaper genie if there's been poop and we dump the bathroom garbage can into the kitchen bag.  I compost too and I think that cuts down a lot.  It also makes the garbage less disgusting.

Sometimes when I look down the block I cannot believe the amount of garbage people are putting out.  I always wonder what's in there.

  • About 2-3 tall kitchen bags a week and we recycle everything else.  The most frustrating thing about my town is that they only pick up recycling every other week- that is not good enough and we are always struggling with finding space for our recycling.

  • funny you should post this, because just this week I was looking at all the trash people were putting out, surprised at how much some (w/ no kids!) can put out every single week...

We have 3-4 large trash bags a week and we do recycle. I just bought another recycling bin because we were running out of space and the recycling-trash guys won't pick it up if it's not in the bin.

I still feel like that's too much and started composting a few weeks ago, hoping to bring that amount down.

One bag. More if we're decluttering, but on a typical week, just one bag. We have 2 trash pickups per week and only put stuff out once a week.

We have curbside recycling and it annoys the crap out of me to see all the cardboard boxes in the trash on Tuesday when they could just put them out a day later and recycle.

  • We use grocery store bags for our trash and we fill a trash barrel per week. We recycle cans, paper, cardboard, and plastic. DH saves glass jars for his workshop, but if he didn't those would go in the recycle as well. We have to use the small bags because when we used bigger ones, we didn't produce enough trash and it would stink before it was full. (I only get the plastic bags every 3rd shopping trip so that we have them for trash.)
