just called the dr about doing an amnio- anyone have one done?

I know the odds are greatly in my favor, but I can't go another 6 months a basket case like this worrying, not sleeping, and freaking out in the shower when I think of all the 'what ifs.'

So I talked to my husband who said 'do whatever you want'. And I called the dr about what my next step is. The front desk left her a message and told her to call me. I basically don't know what is involved. I guess I'll be skipping the bloodtest all together and just getting the amnio done by an Maternal Fetal Specialist.

So if you've had an amnio, please tell me about it. Of course the whole idea about what happens freaks me out- I'm a chicken. but I'll do what I have to do.

thanks!

  • I had the CVS.  It was easy and not painful or scary at all.  I went to a practice that has a man who does them all day long.  He does thousands every year, and in this case practice makes perfect.  I had to rest for 48 hours after it was done.  I am very glad I did it.  My NT came back 1 in 3.  I was much more relaxed for my pregnancy knowing that I was the 2 out of 3.  If I ever had another child I would do it again (Don't plan to, but one never can be certain).

  • I had one after they discovered a single umbilical artery during the 20 week ultrasound.  This could be the marker for genetic abnormalities.  The u/s didn't show any soft markers but I couldn't go 5 months not knowing.

My u/s was being done by a Maternal Fetal specialist since I was AMA (at the ripe old age of 35!).  We decided on having the amnio right then rather then having to wait.  The procedure itself was fairly painless.  A slight prick was the worst of it.  I took it easy the rest of the day and over the weekend and then was back to normal activities.

Honestly, the worst part was waiting for the results.  Luckily everything came back normal, but the wait was excruciating.

     Good luck!

This was exactly my experience.  Before the actual procedure, we did meet with a genetic counselor and I had a very detailed u/s.  But the procedure itself with super quick and just uncomfortable, rather than painful.

  • It honestly wasn't bad. A bit uncomfortable, but nothing unmanageable. The other upside is, they'll give you a very thorough level II u/s before they do the procedure, and at that time you might decide you don't even want it if everything looks great.
  • I don't have anything new to add other than, remember to breathe. I was afraid to breathe for fear it would move the needle and  almost passed out.  lol  Also, as others mentioned, find a perinatologist who does them routinely. I'm talking thousands.
