no more bf-ing :(

well..no more pumping i guess (i was really only pumping).  I was diagnosed with mastitis on monday, and went back today for my official postpartum visit with my OB (i had to go back after 2 weeks because of the 4th degree tear).  the mastitis isn't really clearing up, and the doctor is pretty sure it's because i had a breast lift and implants put in several years ago.  So she was asking about milk production and i told her it's only about an ounce total each time i pump, even after i stand in a hot shower right before.  She said she's almost certain that i will deal with mastitis again, and with only producing a little milk, that it isn't worth putting my body through getting mastitis again and then just the amount of time spent pumping and being frustrated with low milk production.

I knew that i could face this before i had the baby, and honestly, i was prepared not to produce any milk because of my surgery.  I'm happy i was able to get her the colostrum and at least some breastmilk, but i still feel incredibly guilty and disappointed.  OB said i'll feel guilty for a few days and then realize how much stress has disappeared and feel better lol

  • No need to feel guilty, mama! Any breastmilk you got the baby was a good thing (esp. that colostrum!). You tried. After surgery it can be so tough. Formula is not poison. I know that is hard to accept (it was really tough for me at 6 months last time when I had to supplement with formula). Happy mom, happy baby :-)

I am a huge advocate for breast feeding.....and you sound like you gave it everything you had....so GREAT JOB!  When I went back to work with DD1, I had EBF and still was at home, but pumping at work and then my supply tanked.  After three pump sessions I was lucky to get a total of 1.5 oz.  I understand how very frustrating that can be.  Once I gave myself permission to let it go and switch to formula - I felt so much better.  So I am guessing you are making the right decision for you and you will soon feel good about your decision.

  • I think you did a great job! Any milk is better than no milk, and you went for as long as you could. It's not like you're throwing in the towel because you can't be bothered, you have a legit reason to switch to formula.

I think you did an awesome job! And you're a great mom, no need to feel guilty at all!

    My overly happy baby girl!

  • Hey! You gave it everything you had, and gave her all your colostrum, which is the best part!

As my pedi says, breastmilk is not a requirement for MENSA!
