Q. for those who drink...

Do you drink when your LO is awake?  Like at a party or something?

I can't bring myself to have a drink when DS is up, and I don't know why.  I'm a light weight, so one drink and I feel slightly dizzy, but relaxed.  I'm not a big drinker either, so I'm not exactly sure where this coming from.

I'm just wondering if there are others out there that have a drink of beer, wine...when your LO is up.

Re: Q. for those who drink...

  • I'm not exactly a light weight, but we have a rule that if one of us is drinking, the other is not. So if I want a margarita, he's drinking diet coke. I want one of us to be 100% of sound mind at all times with her. JMO though.

  • Yes. I don't drink a ton, but I don't worry about if the kids are awake. DS refers to my cocktails/wine or DH's beer/wine as "mama juice" or "daddy juice." I don't think it's a big deal at all. In fact, we serve alcohol at our kids' birthday parties. Our adult guests appreciate it! ;)

I am not a big drinker but I will have some at events.  My BIL's wedding was a few weeks ago and we had DS with us.  We both got drinks (I can handle one with no problem, DH can handle a lot more).  I took one sip and then couldn't have the rest.  I just wasn't comfortable with it.  DH felt the same way although he did have some after DS had gone to bed.  I don't know when I will feel comfortable with it.
  • Yes, (obviously not while pregnant) but I don't buzz easily. If I started to feel a buzz I would stop.

  • I do not drink unless I have an overnight sitter for DD. Ever since having her I am super duper light weight. One or two drinks and I get super sleepy. More than two and I'm tipsy. DH and I each take turns going out with friends on our own and then we get a sitter once or twice a month so that's when I'll have a few drinks. We still serve beer/wine to our guests as I most definitely don't have an issue if others have a few drinks in front of their children. I just know myself and my limitations.

ETA: I wish I had the ability to have a drink or two in front of my DD as to teach her healthy drinking habits but I don't think having mommy fall asleep or get silly every time would accomplish that. Big Smile

  • Yes, we drink around our LOs whether at a party, at home, whatever.  DS knows that beer & wine are for adults.  We don't call it juice, since that's not what it is, we prefer the proper terms so there's no confusion and DS doesn't think he can drink it.

  • I don't think I've ever had a drink in front of DD.  My DH or I will occasionally have a drink while out.  I'm just not a big drinker anyway so I have no problem avoiding it when she's around.  Other relatives have had drinks in front of her, but I just don't feel the need.  I don't think she's ever heard the words beer or wine but she does know that coffee is just for adults Smile
  • Um, my toddler's standard Friday night phrase is "it's MARTINI time!" She loves it because she gets olives.

Friday has always been martini night. One gin martini while we're making dinner and snack on cheese and crackers. I have a pretty high tolerance and would never even consider getting tipsy around her, but I don't have a problem with a beer or two around her on the weekends. My parents drank responsibly (wine, mostly) around us, and I will do the same with my kids.

  • I'll have a drink.  Just one.  Otherwise, I wait until I'm out without him or wait until he's in bed.

  • Yes, all the time. Seriously. It's a long-running tradition around here to have late afternoon/early evening play dates during which the parents have some wine and we either make dinner for the kids at someone's house or order a pizza for adults and kids, especially in the winter when we've all been shut up in our houses all day.

I don't get drunk, but I don't see what's wrong with unwinding with a glass of wine.  None of us have to drive home, we all live in walking distance, if that makes any difference.

DH and I often have wine with our dinner on weekends as well, when we're eating with DD.

Yup, this is us, except for (awesome) names for drinks - I'm so stealing this!!

  • Yes--I'll have a beer or glass of wine (sometimes two, depending on the situation).

This is probably going to sound awful but last night I was holding a glass of wine while playing hide and go seek in the backyard.  So yes, I do have a drink when he is awake.  Usually only at dinner or on weekends though.  And never much.

  • I'm not a big drinker, but occasionally if we go out to dinner I'll order a margarita, a glass of wine, or a beer. Also, sometimes in the evenings, I'll have a glass of wine. I don't see any problem with this as I don't ever drink enough to even get tipsy when around DS.

  • Sure!  Usually just a beer or glass of wine I nurse from after dinner until their bedtime.  It was a little embarassing however, when I was co-oping at her school and she pulled out a toy truck and proudly exclaimed, "Look Mama it's a tanker truck!"   I told her that's right, what's it carrying (expecting her usual "milk, from the dairy farm from one of her books), but she said nice and loudly, "It's carrying beer, for you, Mama!"  Oh dear.

  • Yes I do. I have a glass of wine pretty much every night and since Lilly goes to bed later than I would like, it is usually in front of her. I only have one glass and am definitely not tipsy.

  • I should add that my DH in the in the beer of the month club and when it's delivered to our porch, DS is excited for him. "Daddy's beer is here!" and that sort of thing. LOL.

  • yes, we'll both have one or two drinks in front of DD if we're out or at home.  Its not a big deal.  I've let her try wine once - and she was not a fan and DH gave her a little sip of beer - which she loved and asked for more of - LOL! So we told her no more, just for Daddy.  And, she seemed fine w/ it.

  • Yes.  We don't get drunk or anything; but DD#1 knows about drinks with "uncle hall" (alcohol) in them and they're only for mommies and daddies.
