Baby Shower - Number of Invitees?

I've only been to two baby showers so I'm not really sure what's the norm. My cousin's was huge - it was coed and she invited all of our relatives (big family) plus her friends; the other was relatively small, I think, like about 30 people. How many folks are you planning on inviting?

ETA: I know that technically someone else is hosting the party for you and thus sends out the invites, but most hosts ask the guest of honor who they would like to include.

Re: Baby Shower - Number of Invitees?

  • Well my mom and cousin is throwing mine and i have a HUGE family we have about 78 people on the guest list... We had about 68 come to by bridal shower... SO we have BIG parties and its women only not Co-ed...

  • My side of the family is throwing one, and I'm sure that one will be really small, but my in-laws are throwing another and at that one we'll expect to have about 50 people.  Hope that helps!

  • I guess you should inquire how many guests your hostess is thinking about accommodating because the size of the site and the cost of the food and miscellaneous expenses is a factor.  I think 30 people is actually a moderately large shower.   Plus it would be relevant to only include people that would be comfortable in that circle of guests unless its the only shower you're going to have. Then you really have to prioritize.  I've helped to organize a few baby showers for friends and most of the time, its been around 10-20 women, a little more for a co-ed shower but those are less intimate, less formal affairs.

  • It depends on your family size, number of friends, location, etc... but most importantly, as PP said, it depends on the budget of the host.  Even if you have a lot of friends or a big family, the person hosting may have a budget limit or a headcount limit if they've already chosen a venue.

I had about 55 at my bridal shower, and will be inviting the same family this time (both of us have big families), but several have since moved so I expect a few less this time.

  • I'm pretty much inviting the same people who attended my bridal shower....which is in the 50 range I believe. This includes, family, friends, close coworkers who I hang out with outside of work and some of my mom's coworkers who have known me since birth!

  • Thanks for the input, ladies! My SIL is hosting, and her apartment could probably accommodate about 50 ppl max. It would be the only shower I'll have as I'm a freelancer and won't have a work shower - close friends and family invited.

Another question - would it be terrible if I offered to chip in on expenses? I don't want to insult her but I feel weird about letting her or anyone shoulder the costs for a party where I'll be getting gifts. (Full disclosure: DH and I footed the bill for our wedding ourselves and didn't have a bridal shower).  We were thinking of doing a barbecue so it wouldn't be that expensive to begin with but I would still like to pitch in.

  • There will be about 50 invites going out. Some of the ladies have teen girls that may or may not come with them....

  • I am having three baby showers *sigh* to keep the guest list under 100. One is about 6 hours away, with my sorority sisters. There will be about 15 of us there. Then my side of the family, which will be about 70-80 or so. BF's mom is also throwing me one, and I expect about 25 people at that. And these are all women only...I am so glad I do not have to plan ANYthing! lol.
