I've only been to two baby showers so I'm not really sure what's the norm. My cousin's was huge - it was coed and she invited all of our relatives (big family) plus her friends; the other was relatively small, I think, like about 30 people. How many folks are you planning on inviting?
ETA: I know that technically someone else is hosting the party for you and thus sends out the invites, but most hosts ask the guest of honor who they would like to include.
Re: Baby Shower - Number of Invitees?
the 4 girls who stood in my wedding, step-sis, a good friend, my moms bestie and my mils bestie. So, 8.
It depends on your family size, number of friends, location, etc... but most importantly, as PP said, it depends on the budget of the host. Even if you have a lot of friends or a big family, the person hosting may have a budget limit or a headcount limit if they've already chosen a venue.
I had about 55 at my bridal shower, and will be inviting the same family this time (both of us have big families), but several have since moved so I expect a few less this time.
Thanks for the input, ladies! My SIL is hosting, and her apartment could probably accommodate about 50 ppl max. It would be the only shower I'll have as I'm a freelancer and won't have a work shower - close friends and family invited.
Another question - would it be terrible if I offered to chip in on expenses? I don't want to insult her but I feel weird about letting her or anyone shoulder the costs for a party where I'll be getting gifts. (Full disclosure: DH and I footed the bill for our wedding ourselves and didn't have a bridal shower). We were thinking of doing a barbecue so it wouldn't be that expensive to begin with but I would still like to pitch in.
I am having three baby showers *sigh* to keep the guest list under 100. One is about 6 hours away, with my sorority sisters. There will be about 15 of us there. Then my side of the family, which will be about 70-80 or so. BF's mom is also throwing me one, and I expect about 25 people at that. And these are all women only...I am so glad I do not have to plan ANYthing! lol.
