So, DS#1 is in preschool.  One of his classmates showed up to school on Monday with the chickenpox.  As in, had the rash and was therefore contagious.  Soooo...now we begin the 7-21 day waiting period (!!) to see if DS#1 gets it.  He has had the first in the series of the vaccine, but the problem is you don't get the 2nd shot until age 4 (and the dr doesn't feel it would help at this point to give him the 2nd shot now since he's already been exposed).  The kid at school that had the chickenpox had had the first shot as well...

After talking to the pedi's office, there's a 70-90% chance we are in the clear, since he's had one shot.  My main concern is my 6 week old.  So, if I see a red dot on my big kid, I'll be moving up to my parents with the baby for a week while DH stays home with DS#1. 

I remember everyone being so concerned about the vaccine schedule when DS#1 was little and I was too, though we stayed on schedule.  I never stopped to think how that would feel when I have an older kid AND newborn.  The newborn will be constantly exposed to whatever nastiness the older kid brings home from school. 

Stupid communicable diseases.  Please think a quick good thoughts for us that we don't get it - or most importantly, that the baby doesn't get it.

    I hope none of you gets it!  That's tough.  How bad is it for young babies?  I know it gets worse as you're older.. so maybe if he's so little it would be mild?  or is it bad?

    Well, it's not good.  I don't know the full extent, but I do know that if they are under 2 months it's really not so good.  I'm trying not to do do a premature Google search (this is why I didn't post on FB - I don't need Dr. Kate to Google - LOL!).

    well, hopefully, if they get it, it's a minor case.  Then they won't ever need vax for it!!  (I'm very old school when it comes to chicken pox...I don't understand the need for a vax - but that's a debate for another time)

    my concern would be more along the lines of hopefully they both have it at the same time and just get it over with swiftly rather than consecutively and a longer time of having sick kids in the house...

    Oh no! I will be thinking of you guys!  That scares me because I'm still not immune to chicken pox even after having 2 doses of the vaccine.  There is a blood test though and you could ask your pedi to run a blood test to see if he is immune or not, you could also ask about valtrex for kids.  I was put on valtrex when I was exposed to chicken pox and due in two weeks with C and they were terrified I was going to come down with chicken pox just as I gave birth.  Chicken pox is a pretty nasty thing for babies like little M and adults like me.  I find it amazing how many people don't realize that not immunizing their kids could prove very serious for others grrr  Will be saying a little prayer for you guys!
