Babies: 6 - 9 Months

how many times a day do you feed solids?

DD has been doing solids once a day for a few weeks now and I'm thinking I should increase to twice a day now? The pedi didn't give much direction so I'm not sure.

Right now we do a half a container ofr food... she eats it all... maybe I should try giving her a little more?

She still nurses/gets bottles 5 times a day. She's 6months2weeks old. Thoughts?

Re: how many times a day do you feed solids?

  • We do two meals and I'm trying to increase it to three. When we started solids he started waking during the night for feedings. Not sure what that's about. Our pedi also left things up to us. He still nurses as often, but not as long. I know my supply is down too, but he doesn't seem to mind.

  • He gets solids twice a day.

Brunch consists of a serving of oatmeal and a half to a full jar of a fruit. He eats until he doesn't want any more. Dinner consists of half to a full jar of veggies and about 1/4 to 1/3 jar of meat.

He prefers nursing in the evening so he doesn't eat a lot of solid food at that time. Sometimes he'll have a couple spoonfuls and won't want any more.

I pretty much let him do his own thing with solids and nursing. We will eventually throw in a 3rd feeding but not any time soon.

I'd say if she seems more hungry at a certain point in the day and is eating a lot of formula/BM then I'd introduce a meal during that time.

  • C has been on three meals since before he was 6 months old, per pedi recommendation. He started at one meal at 4 months and a few weeks later moved up to two.

  • My son is on this schedule at almost 8 months. 5 bottles/nursing and 3 "meals".  FYI...this schedule wasn't my plan (I don't care about "schedules" for infants) but he put himself on this schedule and we just go with it. It works for everyone who cares for him, especially me:)

    5:30/6:00 Wake, nurse

    8:30 Bottle/Nurse, then short nap

10:30 Snack, 1 jar of stage 2 food mixed with cereal (he likes a thicker texture)

    12:00 Bottle/Nurse, then long nap

3:00 Small bottle/nurse and a fruit or veggie w/ cereal

5:00 Nurse, never a bottle, this just holds him over until our later dinner

7:00 Dinner - 2 full stage 2 jars, both mixed with cereal

    9:00 Nurse AGAIN, bedtime

  • We had to stop solids because after 3 weeks, she was getting too constipated despite the prunes and pears. Hope to start again but more slowly and gradually after she is pooping normally.

  • Our pedi didn't give us a whole lot of direction, either.  We started solids with 1 meal a day at 6 months, added a second meal at 7 months, and just went to 3 meals a couple weeks ago.  DS has been nursing/getting bottles 5 times a day and hasn't dropped any feedings since introducing solids..

You're probably ok to give DD the full container of food.  We started with cereal, but were giving about the same amount as a stage one container at first.

  • We started with three meals a day at six months. He's given oatmeal and fruit for breakfast, a bit of whatever I'm having or yogurt or some veg for lunch, and meat and veg for dinner. Doesn't matter if he eats all of it or none of it.
  • She eats a jar of food late morning and then a jar of food at dinner time whenever we eat. We nurse on demand as well. If she seems extra hungry she'll get some yogurt mid afternoon but usually the two jars of stage 2 food is plenty for her.

  • Here's our food schedule:

breakfast-oatmeal mixed with bm, 2 oz. fruit

snack-1 oz. juice plus 3 oz. water, puffs

lunch-4 oz. veggie and 4 oz. fruit, 6 oz. bm

snack-1 oz. juice plus 3 oz. water, mum mums or puffs

dinner-4 oz. veggie and 4 oz. fruit, 6 oz. bm

  • At DC she eats half a jar, twice a day and gets a snack in the afternoon. She drinks about 5 oz of bm in a sippy a day. I give her table food at dinner time, but not consistently. She's not a big eater. She is 37%ile weight and 82%ile height.
