If you have taken LO to see an eye doctor...?

How did the appt go? What did they do?

DD1 will be going in 2 weeks. I've been noticing that her eyes seem off lately, one not following the other all the time... Today at lunch, her right eye was looking diagonally at me and her left eye was pointing straight ahead. I'm noticing it more and more in the past couple weeks so I mentioned it to the pedi today at DD2's visit and they gave me a referral.

DD1 freaked out when I told her we were going to go...I thought she'd be excited! She usually LOVES going to see any doctor and gets super excited. I want to prepare her as to what the doc. is going to do, so hopefully she doesn't flip out at the eye doctor :(

Re: If you have taken LO to see an eye doctor...?

  • DS2 (almost 20mos) has been to a pediatric ophthalmologist twice.  Once at not quite 10mos old and the other time was early this month for a follow up and annual exam. He has strabismus with esotropia in each eye and is also significantly farsighted and has astygmatism in each eye.

Our appointments have consisted of: go in to see the doctor, he gets a history and looks at DS2. He then dilates (sp) his eyes, we wait 30min or so, doctor brings us back and does an indepth exam. He goes over whatever he needs to and we get the Rx for his glasses. DS2 has been wearing glasses since 10mos old.

  • are you going to a pediatric ophthalmologist? We've been a few times- but my son was younger and had no idea where he was! LOL. Anyway since it's a pediatric specialist they have a million games, toys, videos, etc to distract them.

We did fine and there were tons of other kids there- my son just really screamed when they put the drops in his eyes, but that's normal!

  • Thanks! It's just a regular ophthalmologist, not a pediatric one. The pedi said she sends a lot of her patients there and that they're great with kids.

Good to know about the wait time and eye drops... will DD be able to watch a show on our portable DVD player after the eye drops or will the drops make her eye sight weird, or eyes hurt (I have great vision and can't remember the last time I got my eyes checked so I can't remember what it was like!)? I'll be sure to bring lots of toys/games/books for both girls to that appt! Thanks again :)

  • I would say we took Gisele when she was around 9 months- per the pedis recommendation. We took her to Childrens' Hosp of Philadelphia- everything turned out okay. We were sent for exactly what you are seeing with your DDs eyes. At least that is what the pedi described-

  • I took DD to a pediatric ophthalmologist.  He did the standard eye test and also did a lot of developmental testing, like kicking a ball, looking at pictures both near and far, doing puzzles, playing games.  Lots of hand/eye coordination type things.  He gave me exercises to do at home with her and a rec for an OT to help her with her hand eye coordination/fine motor skills.  Her eye sight is fine, but her ability to convert what she sees into actions is an area that she is in need of some assistance with.  The appointment was 1 hour long.  I was really impressed at his evaluation.
  • DD#2 wears glasses. She is far sighted and at one point both her eyes would go towards her nose. Her right eye has since been almost fully corrected but her left eye is still having issues.

Right after she turned 2, I would play around with her and it seemed like she was playing around with her eyes making them go inward (this is what I thought) and I would tell her to stop and that was that. A week later it started happening more and a week after that it stayed that way. Her first visit she was not dialated for and that was an easy appointment where they had her watch a small video while they looked into her eyes and they held up different pictures of airplanes, birthday cake, cars and telphones and they also looked into her eye with a flashlight. The next few visits were conducted with her eyes being dialted and that was a wrestling match... However now that she goes so often to the opthamologist, she is used to it. I always take her for ice cream afterward because I don't want her to associate going to the doctors as being a bad thing.

LO has been to the eye doctor twice, but just for yearly eye exams.  They just do as much as they can.

Can you find one with a lot of experience working with children?

    imagescatteredtrees:

DS sees a pediatric ophthalmologist. He has exotropic strabismus, and will have surgery this summer.

I ditto all the pp's about the dilation, and then the lights in his eyes. Because he was just under one year the first time, they had him focus on pictures of animals and Sesame Street characters. They also took measurements of his eyes to determine what was causing his eyes to roll out.

His case is too severe to be treated with patching, but that is also a common outcome. GL!

This exactly except DS had surgery at the end of November.  Generally if the case is severe, or the issues are in both eyes, patching is ineffective.  Otherwise, DS hated the eye drops, hated when they looked closely into his eyes, but was ok with all of the looking at lines, animals that made noise and moved, etc.

  • Thanks everyone! That is all good to know. Time for us to start playing ophthalmologist at home :D
