Mandatory Overtime

Is anyone else with me?

DH usually works 4 on, 4 off - 12 hour days with a 1.5 hour commute each way.  So, he is normally gone 15 hours a day.  In the month of May, he worked 84 hours of OT.  Instead of 4 on, 4 off he has been lucky to work 6 on, 2 off.

I know with so many people without jobs, having the job is a good thing.  I am thankful he has a good job.  It is just frustrating to never get a break.  His days off lately have been dentist/doctor appts, funeral, etc.  Uhh....

Re: Mandatory Overtime

  • Me!  Except it is 3 on 3 off- 12 hour days that are swing shift.  He has a 20 min commute so that helps out.  I'm thankful that I get to stay home, but sometimes I'd kill for an uninterrupted shower.  Most of his overtime comes from vacation coverage so April was crazy (had to "use it or lose it") but this month hasn't been that bad.  June he will be working 5 on 1 off most weeks.

I understand! My DH works 12 on 2 off out of town, anywhere from 12-16 hour days. He will often schedule a doctor or dentist appt just to be able to come home and relax for an extra day. Sucks to have to pay the copays but he has 70-80 hours of OT each pay check. And it definitely sucks to have him gone all the time. But atleast he somewhat enjoys what he does.

My DH has a 3 hour commute as well.  But the traffic often makes it much worse.  We just redid our living room so he took several days off of work but had to work out home EVERY SECOND.  Now he fixed a friend's car (for money as well as a favor he used to be a mechanic).  So he has been doing that after work.  I told him the next moment he takes off of work has to be to spend time with his son.  I cannot do any more all day duty.  And he misses the baby terribly.

He can get mandated for overtime - luckily that doesn't happen often at all.  When it does he doesn't see Daniel at all that day.

  • DH's work is on and off when it is off he only works 50 hours a week when he is on and a project is due like next week he will work anywhere from 60 to over 100 hours. It is 7 days a week of 15 hour days plus his commute. He will ge zero days off the next three weeks and wil not see the kids unless we go by his work to drop off a drink or something for him. The kids are horrible when the miss their dad it is hard. The best part about it is that DH is salary so he does not get overtime or comp time.....awesome! They get two of him for the price of one.
