Austin Babies

So sad...

Another baby died yesterday in Austin after being left in a car. There aren't a lot of details yet.

  • That makes me feel like barfing.  My heart breaks for that poor baby.  I just don't get how this keeps happening.  How do you forget your kid?!  I know, I know, change in routine and blablabla .... but it's your child.  It's your responsibility to not just space out and forget him/her.

  • Broken Heart Poor, poor baby. I cannot imagine. And those poor people who found her and were trying to revive her. Ugh.
  • Oh I hate these stories.  I know, horrible things happen every day.  But for some reason these ones always stick with me.  Every day, when I get into a hot car, I think of these poor babies :(

We're at my parents' house right now and every time they offer to take one of the boys w/ them on an errand I'm all, "Sure, just give him your wallet to play w/ while you go over."

My folks aren't forgetful- but I could definitely see one/ both of them zip to the store and Jack or Tops in the back just playing w/ whatever and not talking.

I definitely worry when someone other than DH or I take the kids anywhere.  That doesn't happen often, but when it has happened, I've always found some random excuse to call that person around the time they should be reaching their destination.  "Oh, HI!  Just missed you!  Wanted to hear your voice.  How's my baby, you know, the one in your backseat?  Good?  Okay, awesome, bye!"

  • this made me choke/gag when I saw it pop up on my fb news feed from kxan. I feel like I'm a pretty empathetic person, but I can't wrap my head around things like this and how they could happen. :'(

I cannot wrap my mind around these deaths and I cannot imagine how the parents who have forgotten their kiddo feel.  My biggest fear is somehow locking V in the car accidentally while it's hot.  I've started putting my keys in my pocket immediately after taking them out of the ignition so they can't get locked in the car with her while I'm walking around to get her out.

There was a dog in a car yesterday at BRU.  It wasn't really hot but I was p!ssed at the owners for leaving their dog in a car while it was mildly warm outside.  And that's a dog, not a baby!

This is the only reason I keep renewing onstar. I've locked my keys in the car (twice- fortunately, I was alone) and the first thing they ask when I call is, "Is there a child or animal in the vehicle?"

That's my fear, too.  I always keep my keys in my hand.  I never close a door without making sure I have my keys or there's a window open.

  • That poor baby.  I'm sure the parent didn't intentionally leave their baby in the car and I can't imagine how devastated they must have been when they were notified of it.  But seriously I just can't fathom how somebody can forget they have a baby in the backseat.
  • I'm terrified of this happening and no, I don't know how parents do it but I won't judge either because I am sure they thought the same thing until it happened to them.  I also don't think they should go to jail if it is proven that it was unintentional (which I am sure it was but we can't assume this with everybody...).  So sad.

My car came with this sensor thingy that knows if the keys are in the car or not and it won't let me lock the doors from the outside if they are.  And if I accidentally lock the door from the inside and shut it and the keys are inside, all I have to do is push the unlock button on the door handle and they open.  LOVE IT.

  • It gives me chills hearing stories like this that keep happening over and over again. I feel really sad for the baby girl...and her parents.  To have to discover that you are responsible for your child's death, and then have to make funeral/burial plans is devastating.

I keep a spare car key in my coin purse and on DH's keyring.

I thought about referencing that article too. It's horrific. My husband and I got into a huge fight about that article because he thought people who did this were "obviously negligent parents" and "it could never happen to him"....but he hadn't read the article. He called me at work to apologize after he read the article. I'm still haunted by the image of that one baby they described late in the story

What kind of car do you have?  That sounds like an awesome feature.  I won't shut my car door until Kate's is open.  My 21 year old sister looked at me like I had 2 heads the first time I did it, but I am terrified of locking my keys in the car with Kate still in the car.

  • these stories are horribly sad;(

I used to have a hide-a-key that I would put under my bumper (I would hide it well) before I had the automatic lock on the key feature thingy (whatever it's called) - it came in handy more times than I'd like to admit.
