Trying to Get Pregnant

Caffeine can reduce fertility in women

https://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2011-05/w-wcc052311.php

"Professor Ward and his team discovered that caffeine stops the actions of specialised pacemaker cells in the wall of the tubes. These cells coordinate tube contractions so that when they are inhibited, eggs can't move down the tubes. In fact these muscle contractions play a bigger role than the beating cilia in moving the egg towards the womb. "This provides an intriguing explanation as to why women with high caffeine consumption often take longer to conceive than women who do not consume caffeine," says Professor Ward."

Interesting new finding for those (like me) with high levels of caffeine consumption.

  • I have lowered my intake a lot since ttc... use to drink it everyday.. now Im down to like once or twice a week... Oh well, cant give up everything all the time!
  • I think I will continue to drink my morning coffee and my occassional coke.  I have to make it thru the day somehow!  I think this could be said with just about anything that you consume too much of.  Everything in moderation-right!

  • Aw, shiitty. I cut out caffeine for a couple months, but that's it. Looks like I should try to hold out longer. (Ugh, & I drank a red bull yesterday for the 1st time in awhile. Eeek!)

  • The study was done on mice, so I'm not sure that they can infer how much caffeine would have this effect in humans. I'd be interested in seeing the full text article.

    ETA: I did find this:

However, caffeine affects everybody in different ways, and therefore may affect people's fertility differently, Ward said.

"It depends on the person ? how long caffeine affects you, and then the downstream effects as well," which are the bodily processes that are then affected because of the caffeine in the body, Ward said.

ETA one more time: It's interesting, though, that you'd probably only need to cut caffeine from Oday through the 2WW if the problem is with the fallopian tubes moving the egg along....

  • i'd be interested to know how much caffeine they're talking about. i only have about 1-2 cups of coffee a day (i've cut out diet dr pepper for now).  i hate the thought of no coffee while ttc.

  • I agree with PP its all about moderation, I dont think 2 or 3 cups of coffee or in my case a 20-32 oz pepsi everyday is going to have that much affect on ttc.

Thanks for posting that- as soon as I posted the thread I had work stuff come up- I was gonna dig up the original paper too. I'll read it here in a minute...

Yeah it's just an interesting finding I thought, I wouldn't worry too much about stopping your morning coffee but maybe yeah, for the 2ww just cut back a little bit just to help make sure everything's moving through right. Definitely will not stop me from my caffeine fix, just thought it was an interesting bit of info.

Like they said, everybody's different anyways so everything in moderation is generally a very good rule to follow.

Thanks for posting the link to the full article.

This study doesn't provide a recommendation for a safe level of caffeine intake, it just describes a possible explanation for the observation that women who consume high levels of caffeine take longer to conceive than those who don't. So the guideline of <200-300 mg of caffeine per day haven't changed. Interesting study though.
