Stupid Florida budget cuts

so my principal called me the other day and asked me to come in on Tuesday morning to talk to me...well I knew exactly what that meant...yup... I got laid off. I am actually ok with it since DH and I are still most likely moving to upstate NY in August, but if we end up not moving I am kinda screwed. At least I can apply for unemployment : ) The priorities on education are going down the drain! My school let go of 11 teachers already since last Friday!  I hope none of you girls are affected by the budget cuts!!

  • ugh! sorry to hear that! It makes me angry too. I'm not a teacher, but for my daughters future! it makes me wonder what the school system will be like when my DD is school age. Where in Fl are you? We are in Jax. and they are talking about going to 4 day school weeks, cutting arts and sports all together! ugh! horrible!

That's ridiculous! My SIL is a teacher in JAX and she complains about all that too! I am in Lakeland. Yeah the future of education scares me for DS!!

WOW!  thats terrible. I am sorry this happened  The education system is much better in New York then Florida.

I can say this because my girls were in public school in Florida then we moved to New York and they are in public school.  The difference is amazing I am very happy with this.

  • I'm so sorry! The Florida educational system is @#$#@. My first full professorship was in Florida. I went $120,000 into student loan debt to start out making $32,000 as a professor, and it was pathetic the cuts they wanted to make to education even back then.

I hope your move works out! Things are tough everywhere. I'm in Oregon -- one of the best states for unions, public employees, etc., and our administration hasn't agreed to any contract mediations we've made, so there's a big union rally next week. I have to decide if Liam's going with me to support the college faculty.

    Good luck!

It's not any better for education in upstate NY - what part by the way? I'm an upstater...

  • Michigan's education is going to hell in a handbasket as well...  42% of the teachers in my district were laid off - myself being one of them.  Hopefully I'll make the call-backs since I'm the breadwinner of the house right now...

  • I'm sorry you got laid off, I know exactly how you feel.  I got surplused right after I got out of the hospital.  I didn't even get a meeting, just a phone call.  I was really upset, but I'm just trying to roll with the punches.  If I have no job and get to stay home with Violet and get unemployment, then so be it.  The only part that's really bothering me right now is the limbo of not knowing if I'll be working or not (aka if I need to keep looking for daycare).
