Clingy

Ds was pretty independent for awhile. I could put him on his play mat or exercise jumper and he would be content. I am not sure if it is because he doesnt feel well or what but he has become extra clingy as in wants to be held all the time and not just held you have to be walking around. The second I sit down he starts to fuss! It is so bad I barely can put him down to get dressed in the morning! Any ideas or solutions? I know he is sick and doesnt feel well, which is fine for this week, but what do I do if it continues?

Re: Clingy

  • I'm feaful of this happening to DS- I bet it happens to all babies at some point, so try to hang in there.  Do you baby wear?  That won't help you while you're getting dressed, but if you're cleaning and what-not, it certainly comes in handy.  Also, I've noticed that DS just likes to "know" that someone is nearby.  So, for example, a lot of the times if he's "working out" on his play gym and I'm in the kitchen, I'll sing a song or talk to him to let him know I'm still lingering closeby.

  • Yep! He is in the baby bjorn as I type, but unhappy I took a break to sit down lol. I always have him facing me or talk to him when he is in the jumper or play mat, but he used to stay content for awhile, now it is only for five minutes, I hope this changes when he feels better. I love my DS to death but I cant hold him and walk around all day! At some point I have to pee and take a shower!

  • My DD has clingy days from time-to-time. I never know what to do though! I babywear sometimes, but can't do that while I'm taking care of the chinchillas (which is always my biggest issue).

  • Dd's been like this for a couple weeks now, but mostly during the early afternoon.  She'll be tired and fussy no matter what.  Even sometimes while walking around in the Moby.  I have to put her in her swing and turn on the vacuum w a paci.

  • Blame it on a growth spurt!  DD was super fussy and clingy last week.  She would play on her playmat or in her bouncy seat, but wanted me there watching her or she'd yell.  The carseat was a disaster, she'd scream and cry real tears the whole time she was in there, even if it was 5 minutes!  This week, she's back to normal.  I've been reading The Wonder Weeks, and it pinpoints fussiness, clingy behavior, and strange sleeping patterns as the biggest signs of a mental or physical leap forward.

Interesting, because we have been experiencing them all: fussy, clingy, 4mo wakeful, teething, cold, this week has been hard.

Yes, us too. It's been a seriously LONG week.

  • Yeah, this has been her thing lately.  She loves being held and walking around, but it's KILLING my back.  I have a Snugli, but I'm just not a big babywearing kinda person.  I still feel like I can't get much done with her in there.

  • Glad to hear we're not alone!

This is exactly what I was going to say! I meant it last week in a post when I said that this book was a lifesaver.  It makes so much sense and you can pinpoint the behaviors and even when they might end!

This makes a lot of sense to me - we'll have a rough patch with DD and then all of a sudden she'll be doing something new, or will be outgrowing something.

She's been awfully clingy lately and I think it's just that age - she is learning how to do so many things.

  • Yes! My back is killing me. DD was fine watching her feet for 45 minutes about a week ago. Now she needs constant attention. The second I set her down she starts to fuss. I'm hardly eating or peeing cause I can't put her down!
