Trying to Get Pregnant

How far is the hospital you would deliver at?

I am going to a new ob/gyn tomorrow that comes highly recommended from a friend and coworker of mine.  I just mapquested how far it is from my house and the doctor's office is 34 minutes away and the hospital is 47 minutes away.  This was about the same as my previous ob/gyn and hospital when I lived near Dallas when I was pregnant with my son.  I had no issues getting to the hospital in time or anything, but I'm curious about 2nd pregnancies and what is in your comfort zone?

I do not want to deliver at the hospital in my neighborhood and I do not want a doctor that delivers there obviously because then I would not be able to chose my hospital.  And because of this I do not see an alternative to other doctors, so I don't really mind the drive, it's just in the back of my mind that 2nd babies can come faster.  I am a planner obviously, as I am not pregnant, I just know my H was asking the time/distance, etc. so I wanted to get a feel for how others handled this.  Thanks

  • About 20 minutes...but I am originally from a small town where the nearest hospital is 45 minutes away. I have a total of 15 nieces & nephews between DH's & my side of the family, and they made it with plenty of time with each one! I hope that eases your mind a little bit ;-)

  • I will have a choice of two hospitals. One is about 5 minutes away, the other is 25 minutes away. A friend from TK recently delivered at the farther one, and I'd seriously consider going there to at least check it out based on her raving review (they announced the birth of her daughter by name, FFS! swoon!).

  • About 2 miles. My doctor's office is in the basement of the hospital and they are obviously affiliated.

  • I have 3 in 3 diffferent areas that are closer - all within 20 minutes from my house - but they super suck so I don't want to go there for any reason what so ever.  One was great until it was taken over by another hospital and has really crummy reviews now.  And all of the people in that town that have had babies have gone to other hospitals as well.

I'm not truly worried about getting there in time - I know with DS I had to have pitocin but my water did break on it's own at home - that was the only way I knew I was in labor.  I didn't have contractions much until they started the pitocin but I also know each labor can be different.  Look at me - putting the cart before the horse!  I'm not even pg again!

  • I'm planning to do homebirth. Our midwife is about an hour away from where we are now, but I'll be staying at my mom's place right at the end, so about 20 minutes from my mom. (The midwife has an addition onto her home where you can come to deliver, if you can't/don't want to deliver in your own home.)

  • I just dealt with this same situation in Houston!  I have clear lake medical where I live but so many people talk about how wonderful Texas Womens Hospital is in Houston and my coworker and neighbor both love their dr's, so I met a new ob/gyn on Monday and she's amazing!  And the hospital is so nice and one of the best in the country!  For us it's about 35 minutes away for the dr and the hospital (dr's office is on the same block).  I think feeling comfortable with a dr and hospital is so much more important!  I'm just TTC but everyone else acted like the drive was nothing!

  • 15 min....it's the Naval Hospital
  • The closest is about 15mins away, but I'd prefer the hospital that is about 35mins away.

My sister works at the further one & highly recommends it over the other hospital. I still haven't made my decision, but I guess I'll cross that bridge when I get there.

  • ~46-60 minutes. Depending on traffic.

I live in a very small town so I have no choice but to drive that far.

  • Well I have two options:

    1. the one close to my house is 10 min away which is the one I plan to deliver at. It is a new hospital and the maternity suites are amazing....all medical instruments are behind the panels on the walls, x-large wide beds, large tub, a double sleeper sofa and a large window with an amazing view lol The RN's on this unit are amazing! (worked there a few years ago)

    2. The hospital where I work which is 45 min away from home but DH also works in the city so it wouldn't be so bad if I went into labor while I was working or had any problems during pregnancy. But my opinion of the hospital is not that great, it is 25 years old and very sterile looking and from dealing with various types of staff on a daily basis and the things I see makes me question the quality of work that goes on there. It handles alot more patients and is understaffed so I can't blame them for being over worked.
