Baby Clothes--sizing question and what's your "must have" price?

So I'm getting all kinds of sale emails from Osh Kosh, Carter's, etc.

My first question is, am I buying the right size? For example, when it comes to summer clothes, I found a chart that says 12 months usually fits from 9-12 months. So that means that I should buy 12 month clothes for next June-August. Right?

Second, what is your "must have" price on baby clothes? Some of these "sales" don't really seem like deals to me. For example, if a 2 piece set is 10, and after the sale it's 8, I still consider that a bit high for something that will only last one season. I consider it a steal if it's $5 or under. Is that too low to expect? Will my baby be naked if I'm always waiting for sales that are $5 and under?

Re: Baby Clothes--sizing question and what's your "must have" price?

  • I'm not sure about the sizing question, but I've bought most of my things from Ross/TJmaxx/Marshalls and they have really great deals. The BEST deals I've found are at Bealls though. (Not sure if you have one of those in your area) They have the Carter's on clearance, then they'll do an extra 40% off clearance some days so the outfits come out to $5 each! If an outfit is like $10 or above, I pass- unless it comes with a bunch of items (onesie/pants/hat/bib/etc.) Also, JCPenney has good sales some days too!

  • To the first question: I wouldn't buy anything in larger sizes right now unless you love it so much you can't live without it. Babies grow at different paces, and you have no idea what size they will be at the time that the outfit is appropriate. Just my experience. DS was 18 lbs by 4 months, and then didn't gain another pound until 10 months, but he grew a number of inches in length. It was just weird how he grew, and I had things he never wore.

To question 2: I spend the money if I love it. I like sort of plain stuff, and I get DS t-shirts for like $4 on sale, and shorts for like $6.. I've scored some jeans for $5, some t-shirts at H&M for $1, but for the most part, I buy if I really like it, not so much based on the prices.

  • From what I've read, you're right on sizing.

I have been stopping at a children's consignment shop every few weeks and browsing for clothes.  I figure we'll probably get a lot of the 0-3 and 3-6 mo clothes as gifts, so I've been focusing on 6-9 and 9-12.  I've found jeans and khakis from Baby Gap for $3, Osh Kosh overalls for $4, etc.  The deals you can find are amazing.  We've bought a few things new that I just haven't been able to pass up, but the way I see it, the clothes only fit for such a short period of time that used clothes never really have any wear/tear.  I also like shopping the outlets.

  • I have a full closet already for Maddy that my mom bought....She didn't pay over $5 for any piece of clothing that I have. Most things she bought for $2 each. And we have a lot of name brand baby clothes...Osh Kosh, Carters, Ralph Lauren, Harley Davidson, Calvin Klein, etc...

  • It really depends on the baby for sizing.  DS was born 10/10 and the summer after he was born he was mostly wearing 6-9 and 9 month stuff.  He's always been in the 50th percentile for weight (so completely average).  And the 75th percentile for height.  So slightly above average for height.  He is long waisted and has shorter legs.  So he's typically a size behind for pants.  Anyway I don't think I put anything that was 12 months on him until September or so.

As for prices of clothes I'm pretty cheap with stuff.  I won't pay more than $10 for a piece of clothing unless it's for a special occasion or I really love it.  We go to the Children's Place Outlet (I think they have some sale stuff in the regular stores as well) when they start having their sales at the end of the season.  And I don't like paying more than 4.99 per piece.  I really like it best when we can get stuff for 1.99 or 2.99 though.  I also like shopping at Once Upon a Child.  And I won't even pay their normal prices.  I like to wait until they have 10 items for $10.  Or stuff a bag for $15.

Ahhhhh Woman you're killing my shopping buzz! Stick out tongue No, but truly, you're right, I should probably wait. I just love to shop sales/rock bottom prices, which are usually at the end of the season.

There are a few outlets that are 1.5-3 hours away from me, so I have to time my trips carefully to make them worth it. When would you say is the safest time that there's an end of season sale going on? Mid June? End of June? Mid July?

  • If you have an H&M around you stop by there as well.  They have a lot of cheaper cute clothes.  I saw these polos yesterday they were selling for $4.  Very cute.

  • Ditto PP about not stocking up for the future too much. DD was almost 2 lbs smaller than we expected her to be at birth. She wore newborn clothes for almost 2 months! Now at 15 months, she is still wearing 9-12 month clothing (she's around 20 lbs and maybe 32ish inches tall). We did end up with clothes that she only wore once or not at all because the seasons were totally wrong because she was so small. In fact, I bought some 3-6 month shorts for last summer thinking she'd be 6 months in August, and she's actually been wearing them this spring - and they are still too big!

ETA: If you do end up with seasonal pieces in the wrong size and they aren't too seasonal, you can always layer - long sleeve onesie under short sleeves kind of thing. DD had a few sleeveless dresses that became jumpers over tights and a LS onesie :)

No, your baby won't be naked if you only buy things on sale $5 or under. Most of the clothes I buy for my son are that way. If you buy at the end of season for a bigger size you will do fine.  In fact, the only clothes I have bought for this LO were under $5.  However, you will probably want to spend a little more to get a few super special items, but even those you can get on sale.  I buy DS's nicer stuff from Gymboree, but only once it has gone on sale and then I have an additional discount or Gymbucks.  You can get expensive baby clothes at great prices if you are always looking ahead. Good luck!

  • I think we usually take a trip to the outlets pretty late in the summer or winter season.  So in the summer we go in August.  And in winter we in Jan or Feb.  Of course the later you go the less of a selection, but the cheaper the prices.

  • I have seen a couple newborns and the newborn sized onesies just look WAY too small to fit any baby unless it was super tiny. Am I right? Or is it just that I have a warped perception of how tiny newborns are? I feel like they would fit for maybe one week.

I'm going by this.  I keep seeing awesome Christmas dresses at garage sales but I just have no idea how big/little she'll be so I keep passing them up.  But I found an adorable summer outfit at Carters that was blue with white dots and had a red crab on the butt and I liked it so much that I bought it in two sizes, just in case.

I also think of $5 as "that's a good deal," so I'm with you there.  I don't buy anything that costs more than that unless I just HAVE to have it.  I'm trying not to buy too many clothes period and just wait until after my showers to fill in the blanks, so when I do spend, it's either used clothes from garage sales or $5 on clearance.

We maybe had 2 or 3 NB things before DS came. I was sure he was going to be big, seeing as DH was over 9lbs. But he ended up being 6lb 15oz. He wore newborn for about 3 months. I had to send some friends shopping when we got back from the hospital...lol. It does look tiny...but it all depends.

They are SO teeny tiny! I can't imagine a lil person fitting into them. Smile I guess I will make sure I have a few things on hand and if she is a lil one that's just a good reason to go shopping, right?!

  • I looooove sooo much of Baby Gap's clothes lately. They have super cute and great quality clothes. They can be pricey but everything I bought from there has been on sale.

I esp. love and bought the cutest black and white dress for next spring or summer 6-12 months so I figure that is a large age range that she can wear for a while I hope. It was normally $38.00 and got it for $20.00 so I am happy with that deal. I guess it depends on how bad you love something. I am somewhat of a snob and have only bought from Gap, Mexx or Gymboree for her so far so she has a good start to her wardrobe ... way more fun shopping for her than me!
