Friends just had a baby and I want to bring them food...

What should I make them?  They aren't casserole people and neither am I really...

I want to drop something off that will be comforting and easy.  What should I make?  What would you want someone to bring you after the baby is born and the last thing you feel like doing is cooking?

Re: Friends just had a baby and I want to bring them food...

  • Maybe a gift card to a local eatery that has take-out available.  Goodness knows they won't have time to sit down and have a real meal....or at least a hot one, lol.
  • Loading the player...
  • I like to do lasagna.  You can even do it vegetarian style for people that don't eat meat.  It isn't exactly a casserole, IMO and it freezes nicely so they can pull it out and bake it up when they feel ready.
  • My go to meal to bring for after babies is a homemade chicken pot pie.  The recipe I have makes two so I bring one to the family (frozen so they can eat it later if they already have something for that day) and my family gets the other.  I also freeze a couple of them when I'm pregnant for after the baby.

Lasagna would also be good.  Or baked ziti.

     Or even just homemade muffins.

Or a snack basket with granola bars, dried fruit, trail mix, muffins, juice, cheese, etc.

I was going to suggest lasagna as well.  Simple to make and just about everyone likes it.

We have good friends who had their 2nd lately and we've taken them several meals.  Lasagne with salad and garlic bread.  Then meatloaf and a potato casserole which they could freeze if they wanted.  Then BBQ ribs and BBQ lamb chops with herbed rice and frozen veggies, homemade soup & salad, steaks with double baked potatoes and veggies, and one day I had crab legs steamed at the grocery store and added more sides and homemade cookies.  For veggies I buy the steam-in-the-bag frozen ones so they are easy for them to heat up.  Everything goes in foil or other disposable pans or containers so they don't have to worry about cleanup or returning anything.  Really I just make extra of whatever I am making for us and that's easy enough.  This weekend we're taking them tacos.  I'll make a double batch of taco meat and add the fixins.

I just remember, our neighbors were AWESOME and kept dropping off food for us after we had DD.  It was so lovely to have a home cooked dinner made and it didn't matter what it was!  Which is why I am trying to cook so much for my friend now.

  • When my friends had their second child a few months ago I made lasagna - it freezes well and they could only heat up the few pieces they needed at a time.  Also, soups are good.  Again, they freeze well and are easy to heat up as much or as little as they want.
  • You could make a pot of chili and put it in containers that can be frozen. That way they can heat up only what they need for a meal and save the rest for a later time.  Or what about a big pan of homemade mac and cheese? Mmmmmmmmmm.

  • I think bringing food for a family who just had a baby is a great idea. Many of the people from my sister's church, family and friends did this for my sister. A few ideas would be spaghetti, lasagna, sliced BBQ or chopped BBQ with buns, and chicken enchiladas.

I loved this when I had DD.  It gives them the option to eat the meal whenever is most convenient for them.  Plus, they don't have to worry about finding space in the freezer to store something.

  • I gave my friend a big mason jar filled with trail mix and tied a little sign on it that said "midnight munchies".  She said it came in very handy during late night feedings when she was starving but couldn't really eat anything.

I forgot, I took our friends some very mild chili too.  VERY mild.

Our friends haven't lived here long and no one else was bringing food, which is why I brought lasagne.  If they had other people doing food dropoff, I probably wouldn't have.  Because lasagne or pasta seems to be the #1 dropped off food!

When we had DD, we got a gift cert to www.insteadofflowers.com - it's a food delivery service.  It was a great gift!

Food that mom can eat quickly to snack on or while feeding is a really good idea too.  You can buy a veggie or fruit tray, low effort but good impact!

  • Bagles and Cream Cheese for breakfast.

    Bread, cheese, and lunchmeat.

Enchiladas are good for dinner, and they freeze well too.  I usually make a big container of rice and bring it with them.

  • baked ziti or spaghetii...I did this for my friend and put them in individual serving tupperware containers that were freezer ready.

    Can you be my friend?

I'm bringing food to a friend who delivered last week. I'm bringing Sloopy Joes,  pasta salad, Rice krispy bars, watermelon already cut up, and now trail mix because that's just a good idea!

  • Shredded pork that can be reheated easily
  • All this talk about food is making me hungry again. Lots of great ideas on this thread. I like to make little treats for the new parents. I'll make a batch of chocolate chip or oatmeal raisin cookie dough and scoop out individual cookie-sized pieces and freeze them.  All they have to do is pop however many they want in the oven and bake for 12-14 minutes.

  • All these ideas are awesome! Just to add, baked potatoes with all the toppings ready to go are nice, as are taco fixings with the meat already cooked and toppings chopped and ready to use.

I agree with breakfast and sandwich trays... that way they can be eaten over a few days and grabbed when hungry.

  • I've done pulled pork (plus buns), lasagna, enchiladas, taco seasoned chicken plus fixings, and I always do a treat, like blueberry coffee cake, muffins, cookies, etc.

  • Some of my friends and I have a tradition that we bring each other sushi after having a baby.  It's the first time you can have the real stuff after 9 long months!

I brought dinner to friends tonight actually.  I made turkey sloppy joes, corn on the cob, and mac & cheese for their 3 little kids.  I could see from the sign up list that lots of other people had already made pasta/casseroles so I was trying to go a different route too.

  • If you know of more people that want to join you and offer to bring meals try this website: www.carecalendar.org

We use this for women at the church after they have children or if someone goes into surgery. It's a nice gesture to offer to provide food for them on the days they really need it!
