Last summer we got James one of those baby floats that he could sit in, but I'm not sure what's appropriate this year now that he's 2? I looked at some stuff at Target yesterday but was not sure what would work best. What is the next step? He's never had any swimming lessons, is probably going to be somewhat afraid of the water (he was last year), so I need something that pretty much floats him completely. Needless to say, I'd be right there with him in the pool. Thanks!

Re: What should 2-yr-old wear/use in pool?1
We use the Sterns Puddle Jumper life jacket.

My neices also use them and have for years. (They are 5 1/2 twins and my 7 1/2 year old neice just outgrew hers). The weight recommendation is 30-50 lbs. but we used it on Hayden at Christmas when he was 27 lbs. and it fit him fine.
ETA: It is Coast Guard approved which I really like.
I just ordered Nicholas the Stearns Puddle Jumper too.
The 18 month - 26 months is the hardest age to find stuff for, I feel like.
DS2 is not quite 30 lbs.
I heard great things about the Sterns Puddle Jumper. I bought it a couple weeks ago for DS2 and it is still a bit too big on him (he is 25 lbs.....). It was falling off and was too big
But, it is said to be great when it fits, so I'm saving it for later.
In the meantime, I found this and it worked really, really well for him. I was SO happy that I found something because he has no fear and is already wanting to jump in the pool. Our friends used this with their 2 kids and loved it. You can take out the foam pads as they get more comfortable in the water (they start with 8 or so....).

I *think* I have seen these at Toys R Us as well.
GL!
IMO, and that of professionals, that they use NOTHING but sunscreen and a swimsuit. (obviously on a boat, a life jacket) "They" say that the kids need to learn how to swim, float, get to the side, dunk and recover, etc. without the use of aids. And that kids who are reliant on floating devices are more prone to drowning, because they don't know how to save themselves.
I feel that kids in floating devices give both the parents and child a false sense of security. Sure, that means I have to be RIGHT THERE with Ava, but I think that's important to do, regardless.
I like this frame of thinking.
What do you think is a good age for swimming lessons? I was thinking of enrolling DD but then started reading all this stuff on how 2yrs is too early to actually learn how to swim..yadayada yada...so I sort of left at that but then I think of all those videos I used to see of infants learning how to swim and I get so confused....is there like a cut off...like if you didn't teach them very early on, than you need to wait until they are older????
At 2 she started to swim a bit. We started with the buoy suit then moved to the arm floats. We'll do it again this summer to remind her, but hoping she's float free by fall
With the buoy suit he'll float, but his mouth will be close to the water , just a warnin
