Food Allergy

intro

Hi.  I think I just fell off the turnip truck, because I didn't even notice this board was here!  I am grateful, though.  It will be nice to have a place to come to for support and such.  A little background:

Our daughter presented with eczema in December, then athsma in January.  Our pediatrician sent us to a dermatologist that, at two months old, put her on a steroid cream (which did more damage than good).  Knowing my husband had severe allergies as a child we kept asking the question "could it be allergies?".  The answer was always that it was too soon to tell and she'll grow out of this in time.  Well, we really didn't like that answer.  The pedi didn't want to test her, and he didn't really show any concern for her obvious discomfort (she was covered head to toe in eczema).  We sought out an allergist on our own.  We realize that she could still outgrow these, and that she could be allergic to more foods, but it was a starting point.  So far she is allergic to dogs, cats, eggs, dairy, and peanuts, with a mild allergy to soy.  I also believe that she is allergic to coconut and possibly hazelnuts and strawberries.  She also seems to have seasonal allergies.

We give her claritan in the morning and benedryl at night per the allergist and our new (amazing) pediatrician.  I have been eliminating these foods from my diet (she's still breastfed) since mid-January.  The original pedi did not agree with me eliminating food, he even said "Why would you eliminate dairy?  If she's breastfed she's getting dairy."  Yes, he referred to breastmilk as dairy.  That was our last visit to him.  Our new pedi actually insisted that I keep up the elimination indefinitely.

Needless to say, it's been a long road for us these last few months.  I'm looking forward to all that you amazing women have to offer!  Thank you for reading my novel!

  • Welcome to the board!  It just started, but it is so so so nice.  What a long journey you have been on already!  SO glad you move onto a new pediatrician!  OMG!  Sounds like you are on the right track.

  • Wow. BM as dairy??? Someone needs to go back to school. I BF'ed DD and and cut everything she was allergic to out of my diet, including dairy.

  • Welcome!  I'm new here too.  We had a very similar road with DD, who is five.  She has grown out of dairy, peanuts and tree nuts.  Still has eggs.  So...there is hope that your dd will grow out of some of her allergies and the eczema should get better!

The EXACT same thing happened to us.  We dropped that pedi very fast.

My response would have been, "So you think I am a cow?"

Welcome to the board!  My daughter has many of the same allergies as your LO.  Fingers crossed some of these may go away in time.

  • Thank you all so much!  We just got back from a follow up at the ped's office.  We're switching to Zyrtec in the morning and she wants us to put a little steroid cream in with her Aquafor.  I hate the thought of the steroid cream after what it did to her last time but we're at a loss right now.  We'll try it for a week and see if there's an improvement.

Yeah, I'm not a cow!  Crazy, huh?  I still shake my head at that one!
