Bug spray question...

Ladies, I need some help weighing risk/reward.

I am doing field work for my master's and have to spend 2-3 days a month out in the woods.  Previously, I used Off Deep Woods 100% DEET to keep the critters off, but I've heard that DEET isn't a good idea when pregnant.  I went out for my last field visit with no spray on and have huge, insanely itchy bites all over my calves.  Ticks and West Nile are a big risk down here in South Mississippi, not to mention I'm itchy enough as it is, and I know the Off stuff works like a champ.

Is there a product out there that y'all think is strong enough to work without DEET?

Would you risk it if you knew you wouldn't get bit at all with the DEET stuff on?

Re: Bug spray question...

  • I wouldn't risk it- I tend to not worry much about topical things, but, this for some reason freaks me out. Whole Foods has a couple non-deet sprays that I have heard good things about.

  • I would use what works. You could get really sick from ticks and west nile. If you want to try a different spray I would test on the weekend when you can go inside if you need to.
  • I'm sure I read somewhere that most OB's agree that with bug spray the benefit outweighs the risk.  I would maybe try to not go with 100% DEET if possible, but I'd still be using it.  If you can handle it with the temperature I'd try to wear long sleeves and long pants as an extra precaution as well.

  • Do not use anything with DEET in it.  I know my OB is pretty lax about a lot of things, but he was very adamant about the no DEET thing.

I don't have any personal recommendations as far as stuff that works or not, but I know Burt's Bees makes an insect repellent that is DEET free.  Maybe you could try going to a Trader Joe's or Whole Foods around you and see what they keep on stock.  I know a lot of what they sell is organic so you might have better luck finding a DEET free spray there.  I feel like I may have read somewhere that Avon also actually has a nice bug spray that is free of a lot of the harsher chemicals.

I also did a quick google search and found this stuff

bumping from my phone. please pardon any typos and missing punctuation
  • I would also avoid the DEET if possible.  There are plenty of products on the market that are DEET-free.  I honestly think they probably don't work as well, but DEET is a pretty toxic thing that I would stay away from.  Avon Skin So Soft is about the best thing out there for repelling mosquitos, but I don't know about other bugs.  Also, I've heard putting dryer sheets in your pockets (I think they have to be Bounce) is a good mosquito replellant.  And they have those clip on things now too, and wrist bands.  Heck, maybe you should try them all!

This. Do you need to use it every day? My MW told me to use whatever I needed when I was pregnant with DD because there was a lot of West Nile that year. I didn't use 100% deet or everyday.

I have a friend who hikes a lot in AR and swears by one natural product. I'll ask her and post. My DD got Lymes last year and so I need something for her everyday.

Not every day, for sure.  Let me know what your friend uses, b/c next year I'm going to need something to use on the baby, too.

My friend told me she buys products with Neem tree oil in them. It is supposed to work for 12 hrs or so + it is really good for your skin/hair.

I found this site with baby stuff on it:
