other advice: don't turn the radio on without the engine (i.e. hitting the power button without putting your foot on the brake). we did this last summer, sunday of july 4th weekend, while working on cleaning out our storage unit. left the car on like that for a couple of hours and didn't notice when the radio turned off. the battery was completely dead and couldn't be charged. we spent over an hour trying to find a garage that was open and could come tow it and it was in a town 20 miles away. the tow & new battery were about $500. thank goodness i'd recently upgraded my phone to a smart phone. otherwise we wouldn't have been able to find anything. regular phone information was completely useless.
I think we tried to use our lawn mower battery to try to jumpstart the Prius when the battery died after DH's first deployment (I let it sit without being driven for too long)... I can't remember if that worked or if we used my car....
