    I don't like it for a girls name. I think it's a boy name.

  • I think Rian is a boys name/spelling...of course you can name your girl it too...anyone can take any name and name a girl or boy it, but she will get teased in school that her name is Ryan(cause that is how its pronounced)...what if she has boys in her class named Ryan?  Just because it is spelled with and I does not make it a different name...Ryan is Ryan is Rian is Rian.  Give her a name she can use in womanhood.  Rian is not one of them.
  • Ryan is one of my favorite boy names and it makes me sad to see it used for girls.
  • Boy boy boy.  There are so many awesome girl names out there-keep looking!

  • This breaks two cardinal rules of baby-naming: giving a girl a boy's name and misspelling a name. If you plan on naming a girl Ryan, at least spell it correctly and don't try to "feminize" it.
  • Its NMS to use boys names for girls

LOVE Ryan for a girls name...it's on our short list.  We prefer the normal spelling of Ryan, but both are okay.  I know a girl named Ryan and have loved it as a girl name ever since.

  • Honest initial impression:

Are you THAT disappointed you're having a girl that you have to give her a boy's name.

Ryan, whichever way you choose to spell it, is a BOY'S name. Choose a girl's name for your baby GIRL.

  • I worked with a man named Rian.  It is still a boy's name even with an 'i'

  • Rian just looks wrong. Don't like it for a girl, but if you really want to use it please spell it either Ryan or Ryann.

  • I have a friend that is a girl named Ryan. It suited her and I don't hate it.

Ryan isn't just a boy name, it's been in the top 20 as a boy name for decades.  I went to school with about a zillion boys named Ryan and cannot comprehend why it's being appropriated as a girl's name.  I don't think Rian makes it more feminine, it just makes it even more of a PITA for your future DD to explain to people.

  • I like it as a girl's name.  Spelled Ryan, though.

    Yes

If you have to specify "for a girl," imagine what a PITA it will be for your daughter.

I know a girl named Ryan and it fits her perfectly!
  • My husband hates it when girls are names Ryan...because that's his name. I agree with him. Ryan is a boys name. It wouldn't make for a pretty girl name.

There are some boy names that I absolutely do not like as girl names but I think Ryan/Rian is a nice name for a girl. I agree with the feminine middle name to go along with the "boy" name!

  • I love Ryan for a girl. I don't really care for Rian. If you want to make it 'different' I agree with spelling it Ryann. I would also but it with a longer feminine name like Elizabeth. :).
  • I went to school with a girl named Rian. She was, and still is, one of the most beautiful women I have ever seen.

However, unless your kid grows up to be the high school prom queen/most gorgeous girl (which Rian actually did, ha!), is naming her a "boy's" name a good idea?

  • I have known a girl with the regular Ryan spelling. She was Ryan Mary. It's NMS, but if you are going to do it- I wouldnt misspell it. I don't know that I would pronounce Rian- Ryan... and people may think it's a misspelling of Rain.

  • I knew a girl named Ryan.  She was cool.  NMS, but I'd keep the original spelling.  Rian looks like a nn for Marian.

  • I dislike it as a girl name, and the Rian spelling makes it even worse.
