exclusively breastfeeding very gassy baby!

I am exclusively breastfeeding and my son is very gassy.  I have eliminated broccoli and other vegetables that cause gas, and on Monday I cut out dairy.  Does anyone have any suggestions for what I could be eating to cause this?

  • It's likely dairy but it takes 2 weeks for the dairy to fully leave your body. Have you cut out all dairy, including hidden dairy? It could also be forceful let down giving her lots of gas. Gas drops or gripe water are your friend. I found when I cut out dairy LO did better but the gas was still there.

  • it could also be thrush. that happened to us. but, i just used lotramin on my nipples and it went away. are your nipples burning at all? just look into it just incase.

  • I read that a lot of the foods that give YOU gas will NOT give the baby gas -- the whole reason is that things like beans or broccoli give you gas because there are undigested parts of these foods that sit around in your system and create the gas. Because they are undigested, obviously they cannot go into your breast milk. I just want you to be careful because keeping up your health is important during this time -- so don't cut out what you don't need to cut out!

G was having terrible gas pains and I eventually cut out milk, and then yogurt. I think the yogurt was the big culprit. I really miss it, but the active bacteria must have been too much for him. He's settled down 100% since then, and it worked within a few days.

How many poops a day is your son having? We realized G was having a problem when he went down to one poop a day, and it seemed to be a strain for him -- and once yogurt was cut out, he went back to happily pooping 3+ times a day. Good luck!

  • I cut out milk, yogurt, cheese, I don't check packages to see if they have milk products do you think I should?  It's been less than a week so I am going to stick with it and see if it makes a difference.

I have been using mylicon but I haven't heard of gripe water, is it similar?

  • I'd wait the full 2 weeks to see how you LO is and then if it's still bad then consider hidden dairy but looking at the packages. Gripe water is similar it's just an all natural way of settling their stomach. You can look it up online.
