What temperature to leave windows open at night?
I've been leaving the downstairs and my bedroom open, it's been in the mid 60s overnight. I haven't been opening Nate and Alyssa's windows open though, I'm afraid of them getting cold at night, but their room is so stuffy.

I was thinking the same thing. No way would I leave any windows open. But, I live where is fuckinghot and we have the AC on all the time. Not sure what I would do if we lived up north.
I live in BFE, so it doesn't really concern me. I try to avoid the a/c as much as possible (I'm cheap), so we sleep with the windows open a lot.

My neighbours leave their upstairs windows open all the time. Even in winter...nutters
We use a desk fan on the boys when it is too hot.
I couldn't imagine leaving the downstairs windows open. Are you not afraid of someone getting in and stabbing you in your bed????

Here in Europe, we have great windows that lean inside at the TOP. So the openings are only about 5 inches, at the top of the windows. Its great, because the opening is closer to the cealing, were the hot air has risen. Not as much air flow, but the stuffiness is less.
However, back in the states, we had windows with very good locks on them. You could only open the windows upward 3-4 inches. If someone is going to try to get in, they would have to break the window...and if they are going to break the window for that, they would break the window no matter what.
Never crossed my mind, either. I guess I just don't live in a constant state of fear.
55 or 60 sounds about right. I tend not to leave windows open at night because we're in a pretty rural area and those peeper frogs and crickets can be loud enough to wake the kids. :-O
I think our new windows have some safety thing so that they can't be opened more than 2-3 inches, if I were inclined to leave the windows open.

This is just bizarre to me. I live in Boston, near the medical area, so ambulances, etc. are going by all the time. When you live in a city there's lots of noise but you get used to it. I don't have a/c so my windows are always open. If you can't even open your windows because of noise, I'd say you're not well-suited for city life. Although I think Joe lives in a neighborhood so I'm not sure what noise she's referring to.
To answer the question, I've had my windows open for about a week or so since it's been such a freezing Spring.
The thought of "crime" never occured to me either...granted our windows are all fairly high up....5 feet + off the ground. And I live across from a guy who I assume is making meth....huh, maybe I should be more afraid???
Our windows are open often....I think even when its 45-50, we have a few cracked windows so it doesn't get stuffy...they just aren't fully open. When the lows are 65 or above, the windows are fully opened.
Didn't you think, not too long ago, that someone was trespassing, at least? Wasn't your sliding door broken or damaged recently?
And what good is the alarm if the windows are open for someone to come/go thru? We have an alarm we set to "stay" at night (and is monitored by a company), but I still wouldn't leave main level windows open at night. The "stay" function disables the motion sensor part, so the only way it goes off is for certain windows (not all are wired), the doors opening, and the glass break.
We will sleep with upstairs windows open, but only a couple inches.
Yes, the bush on the side of my house that is under a window (window is approx 8ft off of the ground) was damaged. I actually had the police come out and they did a small investigation and found no evidence of anyone trying to break in. I have actually since removed that bush! LOL Actually, all of my first floor windows are high off of the ground, the front window is 5ft off of the ground and as you go towards the back of my house, there is a slope down and the windows on the back of the house are an entire story off of the ground because I have a walk out basement, which means that the 2nd floor windows are actually 2 full stories above the ground. IDK, I guess that I am just not a paranoid person by nature, truth be told. Yes, the thought that someone could have tried to break in freaked me out some at the time, but obviously not enough for me to have an ongoing fear.

I don't feel I live in fear, just cautious. When I was a little girl, there was a little girl sleeping in her room when someone came in through her window and stabbed her over and over again. This was 10 houses away from me.
We have had home invasions in random neighborhoods where they kill the homeowners. Summertime is when this seems to pick up.
I do not live in a bad neighborhood, either.
