Re: Stool softeners..

  • I usually use the Target generic. ?Make sure you get a plain stool softener, nothing with a stimulant/laxative. ?GL and I hope you get some relief soon. ?Also - some "natural remedies" - kiwi and avocado!!

  • I use the CVS generics - the gels.  I typically take one a day, just in case.  But, I think you can take up to 6 a day.

  • Thank you ladies!! I am seriously going to get kiwi, avocado and some stool softener.. Will taking stool softeners help the already formed doo doo? Or do I need to pass that and just start taking the stool softeners now for the future?

  • i take Colace once a day. I also start with a huge bowl of All bran cereals every am and trader Joe's has these super tasty bran fiber muffins. All put together, i've been pretty regular.
  • What is the active ingredient in colace? docusate sodium? because my H just brought back dulcolax with docusate sodium..

  • I wouldn't use Dulcolax.  I called the CVS pharmacy about it when it was all I had and was desperate.  They said usually doctors prefer colace (or its generic).  Of course, I would double check with your doctor's office about it as well.

  • My doctor told me I could take Colace and she also said I could try Miralax. I've used the Miralax and after a couple days it worked pretty good. I also take a fiber supplement, Metemucil (capsules because the powder thickens too fast and makes me sick just thinking about drinking it). As long as I keep up with it and don't forget to take the Metemucil I don't even have to take the Miralax. Good luck!

  • I use generic Miralax. (It's just one ingredient- polyethylene glycol) It's osmotic, so it doesn't work like a laxative and cause contractions...it draws water into your stools and makes them soft. For me, it has honestly been wonderful stuff!

If your problems aren't terrible and chronic, though, prunes and prune juice can work wonderfully, but they do have more of a laxative effect.
