Trouble TTC

Going to work after HSG? (PAIF/SAIF welcome)

So my doctor just had me schedule a HSG for Friday. I am glad because I am nervous about my tubes being blocked and it will be good to know for sure. So here?s the problem, I am doing the test on my lunch hour and have to be back at work at 4pm (3 hours after the HSG) the doctor said I will be fine to go back to work, I just need to take 800mg ibuprofen prior to the test and more a few hours later, and that it should be no worse than severe menstrual cramps. Please tell me how dumb am I to go to work after a HSG?

Also I think it is important to know that I had dye tests done on my bladder when I was younger and was able to function after could I expect the same?

  • I called out sick the day of my HSG, but could have gone back after.

  • I can only speak for a SHG (not the same thing as HSG) and while I would have gone back to work if I absolutely had to, I was glad that I didn't.  I had moderate cramping for the rest of the day but was able to work at home.  Is that an option for you at all?

I had to work a few hours after my HSG and was perfectly fine.  It hurt when they pushed the dye but that was only for like one minute.  No more.  After that there was the slightest cramping but no worse then mild AF pains....and I walk and do physical stuff for work.  It was no problem.

Hope you have clear tubes!  Good luck Friday!

  • You should be totally fine to go back to work. If anything you will just have some cramping, but its tolerable.

I did the same - had the HSG on my lunch break and went right back to work. Everyone has different experiences, I've heard that people with blocked tubes have more pain, but I was fine after. I had really mild cramps for about 1/2 an hour but that was it. Good luck!

  • Thanks ladies, I work in child care and they really need me to be there to close the building for the long weekend. I only need to be at work for two or three hours and will just be playing with babies so hopefully they will help me forget about being uncomfortable! I am not ready to tell anyone at work about our issues so they only know ?I am going to have a test done and may not be feeling great when I get back.?

On a side note did you know your results when you left the test, or did you have to wait for a call? I am nervous about having to wait until Tuesday to know anything.

  • I could see on the u/s that one tube was blocked, and asked the radiologist what he saw....so I knew right away. Didn't get the 'official' results until a few days later. If you google some result  pictures, you can kind of get a good idea about what you can see on the monitor. GL!

I had HORRRIBLE cramps a few hours after my HSG.  I was literally doubled over in pain.  Luckily I work from home, so my laptop and I hit the couch for the better part of the day.

As for the rsults, the dr doing the test told me right then and there that everythign looked great, but i don't know if they typically do that or if you have a f/u appt.

I had an HSG last week during my lunch break - I took 3 advil about 30min before and I was fine and went straight back to work. I only had cramping for less than 30 seconds when the tube went up but as soon as it was removed I was fine.  She actually had to do it 2 times as the first time it didn't work...

Obviously everyone is different, but I think you will be fine.  I did have an IUD inserted and removed.  I probably could have gone back to work, but planned it at the end of the day.  The removal I went straight to work.

    Either way, good luck!

  • I would have been fine to go to work.

As far as the results go, my RE does everything I house, I had my RE in the office with me, she gave me my results immediately, and even sent me home with my very own black and white copy of my shitty tubes.

My actual HSG was fine (not too painful), and tubes were clear.  But after, I also had horrible cramps and pains. Thank God I didn't have to work. I was doubled over in pain. I'm not trying to scare you.  You will most likely be fine.  Just have some ibprofen avaliable!

  • I scheduled my HSG on my day off, but I could have gone to work afterward. The procedure hurt like a biitch for me, but by the time I left the office I had only some very slight cramping. I actually spent the couple of hours after the procedure shopping Embarrassed and I took 800mg of Advil about an hour before my appointment.

    GL at your appointment!

  • it's going to be way different from the bladder test... they are going through the cervix this time... but that doesn't mean you won't be fine to go back to work.  I opted to work from home the rest of the day after an am HSG, but mostly because I was lazy and didn't want to drive the 15 miles.  Definitely take the 800mg ibuprofen and GL!  I hope you are one of the lucky ones that gets KU the same cycle!

  • I took the day off when I had mine and I had a driver because the RE's office told me too but honestly I felt fine afterwards.  It was pretty severe cramping while the test was being done but only for a minute and I never had any problems after that.

  • i just had mine last thursday, and it was early afternoon.  i totally could have gone back to work after, but i wasn't sure what to expect, so i asked for the afternoon off...i was probably at the hospital for about 45 mins...most of the time was spent waiting and filling out paper work...for me the x-ray part probably took about 10 mins, at most....probably bc i was all clear (with a huge sigh of relief)

i had minor discomfort after, the whole thing was not as horrible as i had feared

eta: i did take 4 advil about an hour before my appointment, so maybe that's why i had no problems with it...not sure, but i would reccomend it

  • I took a half day when I had mine.  My tubes weren't blocked, but the RE had a lot of difficulty getting the catheter in.  It was very painful, and I was in a lot of pain for a couple hours after.  Then it went away for a couple hours, then came back full force.  I wouldn't have been able to go to work.  Plus the severe cramping also upset my stomach.
