Rolling and Swaddling

DS rolled over for the first time yesterday (stomach to back) and looks almost ready to go back to stomach.  Does that mean we have to stop swaddling him at night?  He sleeps so much better that way, but I don't want him to get stuck!

Re: Rolling and Swaddling

  • I waited until my DS was rolling back to tummy, but as soon as that happened (last week), we started weaning him from the swaddle. It completely sucks, because he needs it so much still. What we do is use a sleepsack with swaddle and swaddle him when we first lay him down to sleep, then after that I leave his arms out for the rest of the night. And no swaddles for naps. It's been madness.

It's really hard to do, especially if they still have a strong startle reflex, but it's the safest thing to do if they're rolling.

Our LO rolls over all the time - except when she's swaddled...so we still swaddle her regularly and haven't once woken to her in any other position. If we keep her unswaddled, she rolls over and immediately starts to cry - she hates to sleep on her belly.

  • Rolling over is a sign to stop swaddling.  It can be very dangerous if your LO rolls while swaddled.  Try just one arm out, then both.  You could wrap just his belly for awhile.  We then switched LO to a Halo sleepsack.  Good luck!
