How to keep a 1 year old occupied...

on an 8 hour flight, 6 hour layover and another 3 hr flight.....hopefully she will do some sleeping, but I am brainstorming for activities to get for this trip. Anyone have any good ideas?? So far I was thinking to bring a few toys and books, then maybe the travel aquadoodle thing and some big crayons and paper. Looking for more ideas. My LO is VERY busy...all. the. time. I feel like we will need a lot of activities to do lol.

  • Let's get some good responses here - I'm looking for the same thing.

Basically I'm planning on anything I bring being brand spanking new to her, ad hoping the newness will help to hold her attention a little longer than normal.

  • Loading the player...
  • We're not traveling nearly that long, but I plan on loading a bunch of books on the iPad to read with DS.

He can also be occupied for a pretty long period of time with food, so I intend to have a lot of snacks on hand.

  • I hate to say it -- but do you have a portable dvd player? That would help.

Also, ditto PP and bring brand new things -- also brand new fun snacks! Food would keep my kids occupied for a while.

  • I feel really sorry for you having a 6 hour layover! Even without baby this is torture. Anyway, I think it really depends on the baby's personality. Zoe for example is all into new things when we travel, she loves empty plastic cups, packets of things or other stuff that you simply get on the plane. She rarely plays with her own toys. But where many babies/toddlers I see have to walk the aisle constantly, Zoe is more mellow and is content with getting carried a bit around and sitting on the floor unpacking my bag. Perhaps this is an age thing?

We are leaving tomorrow, similarly long international trip, but only 3 hour layover (which I thought was bad!) and I am really not bringing many toys. If your DD is into television lucky you! Bring some sort of player or if you are lucky the plane will have kids television (Zoe once watched all of 4 minutes of Finding Nemo).

My experience is (also observing other families) that it is not half as bad as we fear before leaving. Good luck!

  • ugh that layover sounds awful! For that I guess lots of exploring the whole airport.

I traveled alone with DS when he was 14 months and with the 3 of us when he was 18 months. I spent lots on time walking the isles on both trips (watch out for the cranky FAs though). Bring lots of snacks. I had some boks and a few small toys (like little cars). Mostly he wanted to eat or walk though. He slept a tiny bit. The carseat was a lifesaver when traveling alone and wonderful when treaveling together. Instal it RF and you can contain them pretty well. DS "talked"and played peekabo with other passingers too. I borrowed a DVD player but he really wasn't interested and kept wanting to push the buttons so that was a fail for us. He did sit on our laps and watch the movies from the plane for a few seconds. Oh and a carrier is very helpful in the airport for sure.

    Good luck!

  • Never done the airport thing with our kiddies but we have driven from Ontario, Canada to Orlando, Florida with little kids! 2 the first time and 4 the second time. Like the PP said snacks are great! You mentioned the aquadoodle! It is one of my FAVOURITE trip toys! Crayons sometimes end up on other things, aquadoodle is only water! Plus when it runs out you can just fill it up! We have multiple ones! We also take cars, trains, a shape sorter, books, our Ipod Touch (we have music, books, movies, games on there that our little guys like to play with.) We keep our kids schedule on track even while we were traveling. When it would typically be their nap time, we put our toys and snacks away and had quiet time, whether they slept or just were calm, it was nice to relax!
