I posted earlier about a puking child. When Schmoodle referenced Toodle having been pukey the other day I remembered having seen a post, so I went back and read it, along with someone's response suggesting he might have an ear infection, b/c vomiting can be a symptom. That triggered the memory that Cal was digging his finger in his ear yesterday. When I was home for lunch I asked if his ears hurt and he said yes. So, DH brought him in an found out he has a double ear infection! And the pedi said he probably puked due to the ear pain.
Dr. gave us an Rx but said not to use it unless he's still suffering by Fri or Sat...at his age they don't typically treat the infection with anything other than pain meds and the Rx will only shorten the duration by 12-24 hours anyway. I was surprised, but not in a negative way, as I'd rather not give him an antibiotic if it's not necessary. Has anyone else been told this?
ETA: This is his 1st ear infection in a year! He had several in a row last year and then had regular osteopathic manipulation treatments, which really did the trick.
Re: Dx: Double ear infection. :(
Double EI central over here!
My pedi is pretty conservative so we go with antibiotics every single time. But there is a new school of thought out there that most EIs are viral and there is nothing we can do with antibiotics anyway.
Keep him elevated and give lots of snuggles but if he doesn't seem to be better by tomorrow, I would get the script filled.

G's had two ear infections that I know of. The first was viral as he didn't have a fever, so no antibiotics. The second one came with a fever of 103, so they figured it was bacterial and started him on ammox.
Hope he's feeling better soon. Poor little guy!
Poor Cal! Those damn ear infections. Yup...they make my girls puke too! So sad!
When we took Stella in with her last ear infection, her pedi said he wouldn't normally prescribe antibiotics at her age unless the it was a bad infection. However, since we were getting ready to board a plane the next day, he wrote up a RX to be on the safe side.
I hope he feels better soon!
Awwww! Poor guy! I hope he feels better very soon!
Our pedi takes the same approach with ear infections (in situations where they're sporadic, not chronic) and gives a script but says not to fill unless LO is still not feeling well in a few days. I wasn't sure if this was common or not (because our pedi really doesn't like to prescribe anti-b's) but after discussing with lots of mom friends I think this is pretty common practice now (around here anyway).
I hope Cal is feeling better very soon!!

Ollie always pukes with ear infections - my pedi says it's probably drainage related. (He also gets a runny nose with an ear infection.) We've been offered the opportunity to wait on antibiotics most of the time, but in the end he's always needed the drugs. And depending on the severity the pedi will sometimes instruct us to just start right away (which we did this last time). But yeah - apparently there often is no need to medicate for ear infections!
I hope Cal is feeling better soon - poor guy. But yay for being ear-healthy for so long!
