I've always called it barbequing as in We are going to bbq this weekend. When we BBQ it can be any sort of meat, fajitas, ribs, chicken, steak. I'm from south Texas and that is what everyone called it. What do you call it? [Poll]
Barbecue to me is smoking. If we had a smoker we could barbecue. But we just have a grill so we grill. When I was a kid in the midwest we called it "cooking out" or going to a "cook out".
If it's a noun, as in a party, I say I'm going to a BBQ. If it's a verb, as in what I'm about to do to a steak/burger/chicken/brat, I say I am grilling.
I've always had charcoal pits so maybe that has something to do with it? It sounds funny to say you're gonna grill on a BBQ pit but not so funny because it's a gas grill.
